meanwhile back at the ranch...should i let him bypass this or go for a used replacement,  which would be the better?

Well if it's been disconnected this long without detrement just bypass it and remove it altogether

Make sure you plug the diesel pipe properly though! You don't want a leak or create slicks for bikers now do you?

it was a mechanic who suggested this to me as an option, so im assuming he knows all the details on it, i will however mention that to him..
