Battery going flat
« on: 06 May 2017, 13:36:23 »

Hi Guys, Have a 96 2.5d, the car has started totally draining the battery, it isn't used that much, I have owned this car for several years and has been no trouble until now, first noticed this problem after coming to it nad had no ignition lights, fitted a good quality battery, three weeks later dead battery again, have started leaving the earth lead off, when I leave the car

    Getting annoying, any common problems?

Cheers Dave

If it's not used that much and the battery is old, they can start having issues holding the charge.

Worth putting a voltage meter across the battery with the engine running, see what it says. But probably just a new battery needed.

The OP states that he fitted a new battery and the prob;em persists.
"weldit", might I suggest that you monitor the current quiescent drain and remove fuses one at a time until that current drops to a sensible level (around 80-100mA) and check in the guides on here to determine which item(s) the offending fuse serves?
Good luck, it's a PITA to do.

If its a 2.5TD then it could be a stuck Glow Plug Relay, they arch across the contacts over time and can cause intermittent shorting across the contact when parked up, key out and switched off, when this happens it will flatten a perfectly good within hours.

The relay (BMW Part) is wired directly to the battery, its situated next to ECU in the Engine Fuse, Relay box. The Black GP relay has wires plugged into the top of it, if the relay is in 'stuck mode' then you can measure the voltage (12v) from the battery to any of the 6 thick wires that feed the Glow Plugs.

New battery as stated, just had a look and the ashtray wasn't fully closed, I noticed when I slowly closed it, I heard a clicking noise, after removing it, I found a microswitch for the light, the switch is also wired into the cigarette lighter, both disconnected, also disconnected the radio, checked the battery volts, 12.49, after running to check if it was charging, only got 12.69volts, removed the earth lead, checking closely, I touched the earth lead onto the battery terminal, found it was slightly sparking, so something is pulling a little power

Will check the heater plug relay tomorrow

Thanks for the help

I assume that you touched the earth lead to the NEGATIVE battery terminal, weldit!
If so, make a proper connection and run the engine again to check the on-charge voltage again, in case the poor battery earth is preventing proper charging; it's quicker and easier than condemning the alternater.

Kevin Woods Starting/Charging/Battery guide is what you need to follow rather than willy nilly testing... Although the glow plug really clearly needs ruling out :y

I've had the same problem and found its the central locking motor on the drivers door.  the door locks and alarm works, but checked the voltage on the door and it is still carrying voltage, if you wiggle the lock a bit then check the voltage stops, I think its a switch in the lock but cannot see the switch ?? if you lock the door with the key and not the remote it works fine and no voltage its just when you use the remote.

Could this be the old chestnut of a faulty alarm power sounder draining the battery ?    ???

does disconnecting the earth lead help?  if not i had those symptoms before my alternator reg packed up.  i kept looking for a slow drain but with hindsight i think it was the reg not charging the battery enough.  check the charging voltage.  worth doing because the reg will eventually fail completely and you will be lucky to get 20 minutes further driving before your car stops. even with a diesel size battery (which i have).

The issue seems to have gone, not sure which one of the three things I did was the problem, my money is on the radio, will keep an eye on it

Thanks for all the help
