The normal expansion valve failure mode is for it to fail closed meaning little or no cooling, normal pressures around the system but no leaks. Clearly something is leaking in the cabin in this case, mind.

That may be the cause as from looking on this site evaporators rarely fail. Really need to know how to access it. Suppose that failing would cause a leak into the cabin.
Nor do HGs on V6s but it happened to mine ;D ;D ;D

That's funny

I had mine regassed a few weeks ago and I got a funny smell in the cabin smelt like natural gas and got a whiff every so often. It's stopped now so I'll see if it stays cold

Once your A/C is working you blow cold dry air through the ducts, could the smell be the damp ducts drying out as the dry air removes residual water and any funny wiffs with it? :y

The ac worked but wasn't as cold as it is now,  was just strange that it happened after regassing
