2.5 TD Engine - Correct Oil?
« on: 24 June 2016, 08:41:51 »

I need to know the correct grade of engine oil for the 2.5 TD engine.  I'm aware that these engines need regular oil changes, and with no recent history on mine, I would like to get it done asap.

Any recommendations?

I have always used, for the last 17 years, the GM 10W-40, bought in 20 ltr drums for about £35 on TC. :y

That sounds like a good deal.  I think I will invest in some of that in the next week or so.

As suggested above :y.

It really benefits from changing oil every 3k, due to amount of diesel shite that ends up in the oil.  The engine is prone to the black death/sludge.

I was aware of the need to change the oil more regularly on these engines, although 5k was what I understood to be the necessary interval.  To be honest, at the mileage mines at (163k) any damage by lack of oil changes has probably already been done.  I have history up to approx. 140k, it was a HSBC company car up to 100k and I have their service record print out, makes interesting reading.

BMW actually specced 4.5k miles (later extended to 7k I believe, to appease fleets). So that gives you an idea that 4.5k is too long ;)

Its not engine wear that will be the issue, its blocked oilways, esp on that unit, blocked cylinder cooling jets.

I used 5W40 from Wilko without any issues.

TBH, if you do 3k changes, as OOF recommends on Tractors, you can put almost anything in ;)

I don't do high mileages nowadays, less than 6k last year. So more frequent changes will be a good idea.
