Anybody know which way the handbrake star wheel adjusters work, up or down ?

It depends which way they were assembled; mine differ side-to-side.
If they're adjusted properly it only takes a few teeth on the adjuster wheel to determine which way to turn them. If they're not adjusted it might take you a while.

Did mine recently, it was nearside adjust downwards to tighten and offside up to tighten handbrake on. Obviously i'm assuming as Nick w says these were put back correctly when done previously. Although at 60k miles i would say it is first time dismantled.
