Hull
« on: 02 May 2019, 16:17:57 »

Hi folks.

Back on “world trip” 2.0. Had a great drive up through Spain and France. Third UK funeral this year. That was yesterday. Very good friend, only 69.

Anyway we have decided to hide for 36 hours to recharge our batteries before reappearing at family in Yorkshire and then going to  Scotland.

A member on here previously recommended Hull so here we are in the centre. Nice rainy day but won’t hold that against it.

I hope it is vastly improved over 20 years ago, then, because it was a ****hole then! ;D

.. or maybe they just didn't like you and wanted to get rid of you ;D

Even Liverpool was voted city of culture......or something similar. :)

Yes, indeed, European capital of culture, and very deserving it was, too.  :)

Surely there must be some king of cultural event around your way? Turnip rolling? Who can shove a carrot furthest up their arse competition? Scarecrow baiting?

Carrot up the arse holds a certain appeal.

I shall look into this and get back to you with an update. :)

Early signs quite positive.

Lovely architecture. Regenerated quayside. Street food, free entertainment, had a look around Hull Minster. Marstons Pedigree. What is not to like.

Museums and art galleries tomorrow

Mmm. Room is well appointed.

I thought the stuff is standard but it appears we have had an upgrade. Bathroom looks like Body Shop window display and we have fluffy bathrobes and slippers. Best bit is plenty of coffee . As well as a kettle and the usual four milks and coffees, we have a George Clooney machine and a box full of different coffee blends and milks. Rather civilised if you like coffee.

Early signs quite positive.

Lovely architecture. Regenerated quayside. Street food, free entertainment, had a look around Hull Minster.

I know it's not quite a cathedral, but .. if we hear of any mysterious poisonings in Hull soon, we'll know Putins reach has extended to Spain ;D ;)

BTW since you are in the vicinity, why not take a trip to Bridlington, Filey and Flamborough Head? They're all a reasonable drive from Hull:

Filey is lovely and quaint, there's a nice little hotel on the sea front that serves good tea & coffee called Downcliffe House
Flamborough Head has the lighthouse, a cafe and some nice walking if the weather is good
Bridlington is a little dilapidated but we love it, if you go, call in to a hotel/bar called Rags in the harbour, the food is really fantastic and if you do end up there, say hi to Julie (the owner) from us! (She'll probably remember Brailsford, my surname - I know, poor OpSec giving out my full name on a forum..)

[edit] Could give you a million more places to visit, too..

Varche hails from the Yorkshire area, Aaron, so is probably familiar with the areas you mention. We're off back to Thornton le Dale at the end of May. You know, the place with the mysterious pipes through the wall.

Weather has been pretty poor. Done museums and art galleries plus a few not open buildings today.

Street food for lunch at Trinity Market.

Docks are much nicer than I remember.

Thanks aaron for the tips . We go to Filey a lot as my Mum and Dad were hardcore golfers there. Brid less so but went in January.

Havent been to Hornsea, Flamborough head or Dames Dyke for 40 years.

Apart from the fact that I don't appear to be able to get a job in or near or within an hour of my home city, I won't have a word said against Liverpool.  Obviously it's all fur coat and no knickers, but it's got the Everyman Theatre, and so can be forgiven most things.
Note, daughter is about to move from Toxteth, (200 yards from the Baltic Social) to Salford, so I may be visiting the city of my birth more often than once every 10 years.

For me "City Of Culture" usually means some dump in need of some inward investment and good politically correct publicity.

TBH, after somewhere has been "City Of Culture" it is usually better, a bit.
