Title: MoT failure
Post by: Doctor Gollum on 20 April 2018, 09:34:33
Well, that was inevitable...

It failed.

Rear of both sills missing, front of the os sill now has a 5" hole in it and one of the brake pipes front to rear is donald.

Oh and leaving the test, the EML came on ::)

On a positive note, he made no comment on the headlights :D

So, do I 1. Buy another Omega estate, keep the recently replaced suspension and scrap the rest;
2. Get it repaired; or 3, sell it as is and buy something else?

Choices, choices...

Ask TB to raid the OOF emergency fund, Al.

I believe £10,000 can be made available to senior members in need of a replacement car. :)

You can do the pipe for a fiver in bits and some work. Reroute it if necessary to make the job easier.

Sills are £50 each, with some welding. I have a pair here if you need them in a hurry.

Any Omega you buy is likely to need that, so fixing yours is a better idea.

Leaving the test centre? I would have thought the garage would have impounded it.  ;D

Under the new MOT rules due on 20th May, this is exactly what will happen as it will be illegal to drive an MOT failure away from a test centre.  ::)

Fine for normal folk who would leave the car at the garage for repair anyway, but a PITA for DIYer's as you either break the law or get it recovered home on a truck or trailer.  :P

Many rogue traders will deliberately fail the car giving the owner no option but to leave it at a garage where it will be repaired badly and expensively.

I am sure the government are hoping it will result in more cars being scrapped so they can be replaced with new ones to:

a) Prop up the economy. CONSUME!
b) Be replaced with LEVs or ZEVs because THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

Is that right? My MOT centre is so short of space we candidates queue up in the road. If he impounded one day's MOT failures he'd be chock a block. That means I can drive my untaxed car for an MOT, but if it fails I have to walk home.

Saw it, but have been putting an MGF back together for the weekend.

Have you had a poke about inside the rear wheelarch at the end of the sill under the plastic cover, and along the lower edge of the inner sill yet? Photos would help. I'm probably free the week starting 29 April.

I can get at least four fingers in the back of the os sill without removing anything. Apparently the other side is the same... Popping the wheel arch liner out should give enough of a view.
Will take some pictures either Monday or Tuesday and we can go from there  :y

Does this relate to your experience with 'Barnsley girls'? ::)

Hi,

If a vehicle has it's MOT early and fails the test with a dangerous defect, the vehicle is dangerous and unroadworthy and therefore should not be driven. If the vehicle fails with a major defect, it can be driven away from the test station to be repaired.

Thanks. That makes more sense.
