General Car Chat / Droplink
« on: 28 February 2013, 20:47:03 »
Changed the front passenger side droplink today.
It was a right nightmare, and I didn't remember it being that bad a job the last time I changed them on my old MFL  :-\

Then I realised what I was doing wrong ............. any guessses  ::)

General Car Chat / BP Ultimate 97
« on: 26 February 2013, 19:17:19 »
Stopped on the way into work for fuel and decided to try this as I'd seen it mentioned on here before, and I was just curious.
On driving away thought it felt immediately smoother and a bit more responsive, though I appreciate this is probably just my imagination, particularly as I had been almost on fumes at that point  :-X
I've reset the mpg as well, just to see if there's any comparison.
At 7p per litre over the standard 95, I'm almost hoping there is no real benefit, as I couldn't afford to use it full time, or I'll never get the money together for the gas conversion  ::)

I should also add that lately I've been avoiding the supermarket pumps, and although I haven't kept a really close eye on it, I do think the mpg is up by using other forecourts. Only slightly, but up nonetheless  :y

General Car Chat / Unbelievable!!
« on: 09 February 2013, 15:09:51 »
Driving home from work last night and thought I could hear a strange noise coming from the car. Got home, and sure enough, it didn't sound great.

Went out this morning for a quick look, and found one of the water pump pulley bolts was loose. Took it out and thought I'd remove the others and make sure they were ok too, only to find the others had sheared half way along their length!
After a lot of head scratching I decided I would try to coax the bolts out through the back of the plate using grips or pliers, but I couldn't get enough access or purchase to do it. Aargh!
So I stood out in the pishin rain and stripped the front end off in the hope of getting a bit more room. Thought I'd give local dealer a ring before closing on the off chance that they might have some bolts, but alas no. He was able to tell me that Vx had them in packs of ten (why?) at 75p each, and that they were M6 x either 13 or 15 mm, so I might just check local DIY stores to see if they would have some.
Just hoping that tomorrow I'll be able to get the remnants of the bolts out ok. Didn't plan to change the water pump just yet (72k), but if I need to remove it, then I may as well. And I suppose I should really change the belt while I'm there, though I need the car whilst waiting for the parts to arrive once ordered, so that'll be another strip down.
The joys of motoring  :D

General Car Chat / LPG installation quote
« on: 01 February 2013, 18:01:33 »
Spoke to a local firm the other day just to enquire about costs for conversion, and was quoted £1300 all in. Thought that was pretty good considering  ???
It did include a 100l tank although I advised it would probably not fit. His argument waas to go for the biggest available to allow maximum range. I didn't let on that I knew anything about it as I don't really  :-X
But I have read bits and bobs on here, and use other's experiences, particularly the fact that a 90l tank was considered too large bearing in mind the amp shelf in the Elite  ;)
I didn't think to ask if a smaller tank (80l?) would make any difference to the price  ???

More importantly though, the price did include a 3 year warranty, which would be a bonus  :y

All hypothetical at the minute, but thought it was worth a quick phone call to weigh things up  :)

Omega General Help / Crank sensor?
« on: 05 January 2013, 12:05:16 »
Driving this morning, with no issues. Collected Miss2112 from hockey practice and heading home when car just died. Was slowing down, approaching traffic lights, when it happened. There were no dramas or anything, it just cut out, and wouldn't restart. Was turning over, but not firing. Didn't see anything untoward, so left it for ten minutes and it started as normal, and I got home without any further problems. Car running fine as normal.
There were no other associated symptoms, but it sounds familiar!?

Tried for ages to get tickets, anywhere! Was even willing to travel to Sunderland  :D    (No offence  ;))

Waiting now for Slane to be released on Thursday, though it's all standing, and I would have preferred seated as it's really for my daughter.

Anyone else going to one of the gigs?

General Discussion Area / Earls Court area, London
« on: 31 October 2012, 23:23:41 »
Anyone know of anywhere to stay fairly handy to Earls Court?
SWMBO may be heading to London in December, and from what I can see the bus from Gatwick goes to Earls Court. Accomodation nearby would be handy.

Cheers  :y

General Car Chat / Purpose of the 'B' bolt
« on: 14 October 2012, 23:24:28 »
Afaik it secures the transfer pipe, hoist and in some cases dipstick. Anything else?
Hypothetically, if it was missing, would it do any harm ( other than to the above items )?

Omega General Help / Oh no, what have I done .... ?
« on: 05 October 2012, 18:37:58 »
Changed the stat and cam covers as planned. Took a lot longer than expected, but hey .......
Finally started her up tonight, and it started first time -- result  :y

But it sounds like a tractor. Not a diesel, a tractor. In fact a tractor chewing a bag of spanners  :'(

Everything is connected etc, and I didn't really do anything that should affect it in this way, I don't think.
But, I have a sinking feeling that I have lost a washer which I was using to bridge the gap for the new stat. At first I thought I had miscounted, but now ......  :-[
Standing at the front of the car, it could only have gone down the gap at the front of the stat, in towards the back of the cambelt cover. It did not get down the inlets.

So, what's next? Anyone any ideas re the noise which is not related to a suspected 'foreign body'?
And if the washer did slip through, where would / could it go from there?

Thank you ................... going for a cry now and to hang my head in shame. Please be gentle  :-X

Omega General Help / Engine hoist plate ......
« on: 05 October 2012, 08:11:54 »
Whilst working at the b bolt and transfer pipe, the hoist plate has moved. This didn't happen the first time, but it has fallen over so to speak, and I can't get it righted. I can remove it altogether but can't get it reseated properly. I have the b bolt engaged again, but the plate isn't straight, or flush as it should be.
I'm concerned that if it isn't properly engaged the b bolt won't tighten the transfer pipe accurately, but I don't want to remove it as the bolt will then be too long?
Anyone had to reseat the plate before, and can you give me any tips?
The chances of me needing the hoist are very slim, and I would consider removing the bottom hook if necessary, but I thought I'd check with the experts first  :y

Omega General Help / Transfer pipe part number?

Anyone have the part number for the stat transfer pipe, or the relevant O rings if they're available separately please?
Just in case  :-X

General Car Chat / Aw bugger!
« on: 03 October 2012, 19:12:28 »
I'd hoped to be sitting down tonight penning a post about my stat and cam gasket change, and how I'd conquered the B bolt. Instead I'm scratching my head and muttering under my breath  :-[

All had gone well I thought. Work and family had forced me to do it in stages and take my time. Weather didn't help either.

So all reassembled today, and went out after tea to top up the coolant and fire her up.
Unfortunately, as I was adding the coolant, it was running out onto my driveway  :-*
Not so much a leak, more of a waterfall! First thought was the drain plug, but I can see fluid running onto the sump. Can't see where it's coming from, and guess either something has gone spectacularly wrong, or I've left a pipe disconnected somewhere. When I take the plenum off again tomorrow I suppose I'll get a better idea if it's the new stat or maybe the transfer pipe. I'm hoping not as that bolt is a right B! Can't think of anything else, so I'll have to wait and see .........  :-*

Gutted  :-X

Omega General Help / Cam cover gasket advice
« on: 02 October 2012, 14:55:01 »
Just fitting new gaskets, and it is in one piece. The two bits that join each side have no recess to fit into, causing them to stand proud of the cover.
I take it these have to be removed, so in effect there are two gaskets for each bank?
Cheers

Omega General Help / Stat replacement
« on: 01 October 2012, 14:03:14 »
All going ok ish, but couldn't understand why the bolts wouldn't tighten. Now realise the stat base plate is much shallower on the replacement. Does anyone know if there are shorter fittings to allow for this? Or is it a case of using washers to make up the difference?
