Apparently Neil when there has been no gas in for a while the seals perish, but then mine had not had any gas in for at least a few months and filled up fine :-?

I had a long chat with my regional Kwik Fit manager after similarly poor service. He said the machines they have invested in can print out a detailed report on exactly what went wrong. In my case they decided to fob me off. I think in most cases the fitters can't be @rsed with the air con side of things and would rather be fitting tyres.

I hope they didn't charge you.

The first thing the machine should have done is to vacuum out whatever's in the system and check for leaks, so maybe that's where it failed?

I would take it to a good air con specialist, personally.

Typical Kwik fit  >:(

Of course the machine will not tell them where the fault is.  The machine deals with the removal, vacuum of the system and addition of the gas.  Your system has no gas which means that there is a leak somewhere.  I would suspect the condenser (the first radiator at the front of the car).

If I were you, I would go to an air con specialist (not Kwik Fit) and get them to pressure test the system which should be done with Nitrogen.  They should then be able to detect where the leak is coming from and replace the part.  I would get them to replace the receiver / dryer and then do a through vacuum.  When this has been done, they can then re gas the system.

When you have the system working again, be sure to run it at least twice a month (preferably more) for 10 minutes or more.  This will keep the oil circulating which will preserve the compressor and the various seals that are in the system.

Hope this helps.

Reminds me of an incident that I had with Kwik Pr1ck, I purchased my Meega on the wednesday before a bank holiday 3 years ago, on the Friday I got a puncture, irrepairable, I asked at the local Kwik Pr1ck for a quote for a new Michelin tyre (To balance the same brand to make a set of 4)  Now, I specifically requested that the tyre be fitted the same day (FRIDAY), as we had things aranged for the long weekend, Yes Sir! we can do that and your quote is £130 for one and £250 for two fitted and balanced :'(, but we can't do it until Tuesday !!!!!!!!!!  :o::)   What the opps are they about???? Are they politicians or something????

Glad you got your air con sorted, think you'll need it this year..
