To get the best from a proper gas BBQ, it still needs a good 40mins to warm up.  But 99% of gas BBQs are just gas grills.

Lava rock? Sounds like it's not a barbecue but an outdoor gas oven. If so, bin it and either get a barbecue or use the indoor oven.

Out door gas oven yup, for camping trips. While I agree BBQ food via charcoal tastes better, this is bit more practical when out and about.

Thinking about it, I don't have a gas bottle for it any more. I have a bigger one for main BBQ in the garden, but the connection is not the same. Might look at a new grill, which takes same connector as one in the garden so I can share the gas bottle between them.
