General Car Chat / Re: Might be of imterest JLR independant garage

CBA to look at vid, but there is an awful lot of BS about the Ingenium 4 pot.

Yes, like any modern EU6 diesel, there are a bucket load of emissions crap bolted to it, to appease the misinformed tree huggers, such as DPFs, SEC, EGR(s), electronically controlled flows on the water pump, stop/start blah blah blah

The Achilles heel with the soot chucker is stated as being the chains.  I'd counter argue that, and say the achilles heel is stupid service intervals of (in the UK market) 21,000 miles.  Nobody makes an oil that hasn't significantly broken down enough to lose its properties beyond 7k, and on diesels you have the added fun of diesel particulates (which makes the oil go black so quickly).  Given virtually all diesels are turbocharged, and turbos need good oil, any owner would be a bit soften in the head to let the oil run for that long for feel of shagging the turbo.

Given that this engine is also chain driven, all those particulates, which is like microscopic grit, aren't going to do chains any favours either.  As with any chain driven engine (and elastic band driven engines that use wet belts, like Ford), long service intervals are a sure way to increase wear.

Now there are some idiotic designs on it, like the chains being fitted at the back of the engine, which is a brilliant idea if you need to replace the chains regularly due to the marketeers winning the service interval battle. NOT.

There are also some designs on it that confuddle the usual "mechanics", like active engine mounts, and positive crankcase pressure.

Like any new engine, its been revised to overcome its issues.  I think the biggest is a revised chain/tensioner setup that became standard from around 2018ish? (sure DTM can confirm exactly when), and this is the setup you want to swap over to if ever you do need to replace the chains or tensioners.

As an owner of a very early, 130k example that looks to have been serviced by independent garages but to JLR intervals, I think its not a bad engine.  Mostly easy to work on (chains aside!), very drivable, and stupidly economical - even I'm knocking on the door of 70mpg when I drive it into the office in Brumingham.

Back to Youtube. Most "creators" on Youtube are just saying stuff to try to make their videos get viewed.  Controversy is always a good way, particularly if you can get forums or social media to make it go viral.  Its all money for the "creators".  I can guarantee you they have turned on monetisation on the channel ;).  And everyone loves to hate JLR, as can be seen from millions of Range Rover insurance youtube videos.  And don't even get me started on the wankstain Geoff Buys Cars - I can only assume his father abused him as a child...

I just caused some embarrassment on my walk with the dog. As my wife says, I would cause an argument in a telephone box  :-[
On Grimethorpe muckstack, there are loads of lovely conifers that have been growing for about 20 years, just starting to look full and smell lovely. They're cutting them down! When I asked why,  I was told they shouldn't have been planted in the first place, they are an invasive species. What about these twáțs who come over on boats? I asked. They're an invasive species, are we gonna chop their fùckin legs off?
Silence. I walked off.
;D ;D

Oh, that has properly cheered up an otherwise miserable afternoon :y

Not the tree bit, obviously.

The car app on her phone.  It says one of the tyres has a pressure problem.  Turns out it isn't lying.

Back in the seventies my cousin bought a brand new Alfasud looked great, but after 4 years every panel including the roof had bubbled up with rust, his sister had a Fiat Strada which was just as bad.
Much like my Astra GTE, only that was 3yrs old when I got shot of it.  No idea where that was made, kinda guessing in Liverpool. By Italians.

Alfa Romeo have made some beautiful looking cars over the years.
Indeed, and most of them handle pretty well as well...   ...when they are working ;D

And not turned to dust.
I believed its all called Italian Character ;D

It's why the Italians thrash their cars, because they don't have much time before they dissolve!  ;D
Whats my excuse ;D

But he'll have to go, as the media nor Labour/SNP will let it go, and it'll become too much of a distraction when every government official will get asked about it at every event.

As others have said, the belt on these should be done every 4yrs or 40k miles (60k km), so *should* have been done.  Budget for getting it done if you cannot 100% guarantee it has been.  In reality, the change schedule is to reduce the risk of failure to near zero, and even if not strictly followed, shouldn't be an issue.  But given the reasonably cheap cost to do it (about 1hr labour and somewhere between €60 - €200 for the part depending on if you want genuine or pattern), its not worth debating further.

The Cambelt Kit is essentially the belt, 2 idlers and a tensioner.  Don't just do the belt, its the idlers and tensioner that tend to fail.

Water pump doesn't necessarily need to be done. Personally, I'd check if the bearings were good, and no signs of weeping, and only change if necessary.

The aux belt tensioners tend to dry out their bearings, so a new pulley (less than €10) is alwasy handy to have on standby as well.

A plastic valve at the back, called the Heater Bypass Valve (HBV) tends to start to leak.  I'd only replace it if it does leak.  My last Omega is still on its original factory HBV 21years later.  My previous Omegas had about 3 or 4 of them in my ownership.

I also know that those engines do not have a good reputation, even though the car has only driven 130,000 km..
The engines are pretty good if serviced regular.  There are issues around cam cover gaskets failing every few years, and the oil cooler leaking on early models.

The Omega/Catera have a fair few other problems - rust, suspension being the main 2 I think - that kill them (if the owner can't be bothered to sort them), rather than the engine.

I'm not familiar with prices in Eastern Europe.  In the UK, it would have very low value, but it seems in most European countries the values are much higher.  Not quite sure why that is to be honest.

Pity - he only got the bike  ;)
Quite, and its his own fault as he clearly (like all camera wearing cyclists) wanted to make it look more dramatic by getting as close as possible.

This garage is probably a lot cheaper if you're looking for something to blow up?  >:D
I w2as, of course, referring to one of their cars, rather than the garage.  I can't see selling Rovers is a long term business in 2024 ;D

« on: 26 February 2024, 09:40:59 »
When buying adblue, take a empty 10-20L drum to garage and use the adblue pump that the trucks use,, it's cheaper than pre-packaged 10L drums.
Good tip :y, not that I think we have any round here :(.

I think I'm currently paying around £7 delivered for 10l, so not really worth driving anywhere to find any.
