Title: How Far Would You Go For The Right Car?
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 13 October 2018, 01:45:09
I've spotted a car for sale that I quite like the look of, but unfortunately it's way way Ooop Norf, so a long long way to go and look at something that might be a shed!  ::) :-\

However, and here's the thing. It's advertised on the forum for that type of car, has average mileage for the age, FSH by either dealer or specialist, looks great in the photos, good MOT history and it's claimed to have had all the things that go wrong with that type of car all sorted.  :y

There are a lot of dogs about and this one appears to be a well looked after example and the owner is clearly an enthusiast.  But it's a bloody long way to go for a car!  ::)  ;D

I think Opti started this trend. I'm looking at a car, but I'm not telling you what it is or where it is.........it's a secret. When/if I buy it, we'll have three pages of guessing what it is.

Depends on the rarity of the car, a 3yo ford fiesta, probably 25miles max as I'm confident I could find the spec/colour/configuration of my choice in Birmingham somewhere.

Something like the terracan I was looking at, where there's about 20 for sale in the uk, I'd probably travel as far as was needed.

I was trying to help keep your brain active.

Sitting watching endless inane episodes of Emmerdale and 'Corrie' will turn your brain to mush. :)

For the right car, anywhere in the country.

My Omega's came from Sandhurst, Newbury, Swindon, Manchester, Dursley, Southend and Shawbury. I still have three of them but these are the final ones, hopefully keep going for a few years but goodness knows what'll replace them.

Lòoks good, never see them now.

For the right car i'd travel any distance as long as it is viable/economical.
I twice flew over to the UK to view E24 BMW's , both of which were criminally ill described.......
Bought mine in NI flying up to Dublin and the coach to seller . Bought it ,tore up my return air ticket and drove it 350 miles home.
Make a memory of the event.
Good luck.

I bought my Elite in Poole and drove it home to Cornwall (150 miles?)

I bought Mr Rog's MV6 Estate from James (and then accepted his generous offer to deliver it) - I should have travelled about 200 miles to collect it but James saved me the bother (and he collected it from Wales when he got it)

I had a 1.7 Ital estate. I think the 1.7 engine was actually OK. Quite smooth, reasonably powerful, didn't need a lot of maintenance and made the 1.8 lump look very agricultural. The rest of the car, however.. ::)

£3500 I think - original and unmolested, complete with double-glazed windows, four wheel drive, a V8 (that is virtually silent, sadly!), and in VGC.

The boot is cavernous.. a lot of car for the money.

Plenty of them go for around £2500. Although at that price they might want  bit of TLC. As long as the ABC system is ok, then most other things are doable.

When I bought my current Omega, the plan was for it to be a stop gap until I found a CL500 I wanted. Trouble is, I have put a lot of time and money into the old girl and im really happy with it. I will wait until I get bored with it and then, hopefully pick up a nice CL500. :)

Well you could have it collected and bought down to you.

I used Falkirk Car Carriers to bring my pfl MV6 back from Glasgow for £195 + vat. I’m in East Yorkshire.

Costs no more than a full tank of fuel and a your time away

If it’s good 👍, if it’s not so good you can sell it on and not really have wasted your time and most of the costs going yourself

A beautiful car. It's probably nowhere near the reserve.

You could take a drive over to Miseryside and pick this one up for around 3 grand. Go on STEMO, treat yourself.  ;)

Or if your feeling really mad. A 6 litre V12, twin turbo, 500+bhp version. Was £115,000 new apparently. 8)

I'm a Yorkshireman now, it's 50 miles to the gallon or nowt.  ;D

No pleasing some people.  ::)
Right then, buy this one too and use it most of the time for close to infinite MPG. Use the CL on Sundays only and MPG will average way above 50.  :P

Now that sounds nice, how much did that cost him?

As that kinda vintage is only way I could ever scratch that V8 ich....

£3500 I think - original and unmolested, complete with double-glazed windows, four wheel drive, a V8 (that is virtually silent, sadly!), and in VGC.

The boot is cavernous.. a lot of car for the money.

Nice, my VCDS would work well with that. Tempting thoughts if the 3.2 died.

That does look, to quote the ad, stunning.

Would tick a huge amount of my boxes, effortless power and very comfortable ride.

I'd be concerned about parts cost though and DIY work.

Bah, it was built by people not pixies, ergo, you can work on it...

Only expensive bits are airmatic bits and vacuum pumps.

Plenty of online support globally too, but only a four seater, so you may be better off with an S Class :-\

Merc parts are often not as expensive as you might imagine. Several good forums with lots of info for diy work.
Main expense can be the ABC system if it goes wrong, but there is info to sort that without taking out a mortage.

A lot of MB main dealerships give discounts to MB club members & also most parts for older models are sold at reduced prices, anything I needed for my 190e was very reasonable, only purchased service items for the V8 & they were also at excellent prices from MB in Boston Lincolnshire.

Main dealer parts are usually quite reasonable, and most people can blag discounts anyway.  I've found MB and BMW to be very reasonable on parts and accessories, even undiscounted.

You lot aint helping, the Wife is a Merc fan for some reason.  :-\

I'd probably not get something crazy like CL500 though, despite wanting one, probably go all sensible and 'dad mode' and get Facelifted W211 E320 CDI estate.

Although who knows what they will do with London ULEZ, just a minor change to current 2021 plans mean big changes in my choice of commuter hack.

Get a W212... Less prone to undercarriage rot than the W211 ;)

Anything decent from MB is going to be a bit older than the Omega, and will require loving, which we already know you CBA with.  Also, being older, will get hit with emissions wank.

I could almost forgive the CLS500's minging looks and poor build because its a nice engine...   ...in the same way I could forgive the BMW badge on a (real) M5.

I think the first point will drive you towards something dull, reasonably economical and ultra reliable like an Insignificant or very late Mundano (early ones plagued with electrical issues). Unless the badge is more important than anything else, which I suspect it might be ;)

Insignia would have to be facelift version, auto, Elite trim, 170bhp whisper engine, leather seat upgrade.  :)

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the 'whisper' bit. Wifey's sounds like the same bag of nails as mine from outside, it's just quieter inside the car.

I very nearly bought an M5 Touring once upon a time.. I think they're starting to appreciate in value now, that's another boat missed, then! ;D
