Suspect alternator, can you replace diodes ?
« on: 31 January 2016, 18:26:24 »

Hi all,

My Father's 2.2 Auto Petrol (face lift Y plate) I believe as a goosed alternator.  I read somewhere you can get a new Diode pack ?

Story is :

  • on driving to hospital he experienced a Christmas tree of lights come on the dash
  • autobox appeared to stay in 3rd but managed to get there and back
  • next morning battery was flat and had to use manual key to gain entry as locks not responding to fob
  • charged battery for few hours to get some life and Left overnight, but following morning battery volts had plummeted
  • battery is 4years old

His mechanic is coming tomorrow to look but I assume if alternator diodes faulty then they could short battery this causing the drain overnight ?  Or there is a issue with one of the electrical circuits on the car.

He has got a new battery to put on it now, but I was wondering if the Diode pack can be replaced (if its that) and how much one would expect pack to be - cheaper than an alternator I assume  :y

Thanks in advance.

The rectifier (diode pack) can be purchased separately from various sources.

Straightforward to measure to prove faulty.  Doubt it would cause a drain on battery though?

Thanks.

Battery was zero, so maybe a failed battery having had a bit of a Workout if alternator goosed ?

Hopefully can get sorted but will pass on good news that Diode pack can be obtained  :y

:-[  Ooops, Yep, I mean Regulator.  The module which bolts onto Alternator - Part F00M146609  :y

Ordered today of Tinterweb  :y - He got one for £20

I only deal with 132,000 AC Voltages  :D  Non of that new fangled DC 8)

Your not trying, I mess with upto that and beyond in AC and DC.........and 11kV........on ships!  :y

But yes, its always the reg that goes (short circuit in this case), watch the battery as over voltage can boil them

The Diodes are the key components of the rectifier pack.
