General Car Chat / Long Drive
« on: 16 November 2010, 22:12:15 »
We are looking at driving up to Scotland in the next few weeks and any advice on what precautions i can take with the car before i set off would be appreciated. I have recently done an oil and filter change about 3000 miles ago but the plugs haven't been changed for about 10000 miles. Tyres are good so what do you people recommend, Apparently it will take about 12 hours to get there.
Need to purchase a Scottish phrase book i think.

General Car Chat / Astra
« on: 22 August 2010, 21:38:45 »
Next year i will have to start travelling approx 30 miles each way to work and i am considering buying a secondhand late model Astra deisel to travel to and from work.
Not knowing to much about these cars i was wondering which is the best secondhand one to go for. They have two models, the 1.7 and 1.9.
I am obviously looking at economy, reliability, price as well as comfort.
Has anyone here got any knowledge on these cars and what to look out for etc.

Cheers

General Car Chat / Bedding in brakes and MOT
« on: 12 August 2010, 22:18:52 »
After replacing the pads and dics on my Senator, how do i go about bedding in the brakes prior to an MOT.
The reason i am asking is because i need to bed in the brakes before an MOT for it not to fail on brake performance. The car has got no MOT or Tax but is insured. To get the Tax as you already know requires an MOT.The car is sure to fail on brake performance until i have bedded in the brakes how can this be done?
Am i allowed to run the brakes in prior to a MOT or does it have to be booked into an MOT station and try and bed the brakes in on the way there (would be difficult as the MOT station is less than 2 miles away).
Any ideas please as i am confused as the correct way of going about this whilst staying on the correct side of the law.

General Car Chat / Alloy wheel refurb
« on: 20 March 2010, 19:38:26 »
I need to fix slight kerbing on one of my alloy wheels. Being a tight git i want to do this myself. Now after you have cleaned the area can you use good old P40 to repair any small indentations or does it have to be a filler specially made for Alloys. If so any idea what filler do i use.
Thanks for your help

General Car Chat / Mileage adjustment
« on: 15 December 2009, 20:12:03 »
Does anyone know of someone in the area who can do a mileage adjustment on a digital dash.Plenty of companies in the area but charge an absolute fortune. My Senator dash is getting replaced with one that works but with a higher mileage. I want the correct mileage shown on the dash.Has anyone had one done before. :y

General Car Chat / Drilling out rivets
« on: 05 December 2009, 00:39:36 »
Believe it or not i have never drilled out rivets before, so is there a way of doing it.After drilling out do you then pull out the remainder with pliers and how much do you need to drill out. The reason for this is because i need to get into the digi dash on my Sennie to replace a capacitor and it looks like it is riveted down in 5 places to stop tampering.  :y

General Car Chat / Astra problems
« on: 13 November 2009, 20:05:09 »
My mate has an Astra G and he has a problem. His indicators stay on even when the car is switched off. It sounds like an immobiliser fault but has anyone encountered this problem before and how to fix it.His battery has also now run flat ::)
