Restoring old portable bbq?
« on: 30 June 2019, 17:43:28 »

I’ve got an old portable BBQ, it’s very old as GrampaT had it. I used to use it well in my student camping days, but it’s been left for a few years in garage and has rusted up a bit.

I know I can clean up the grill, but it’s the under body where the lava rock is. Wondering if I should clean it up or just leave it and just use it as is.

New ones are £30 odd, so any paint etc it’s not much for a new one. But a tin of black hammerite high heat?

Have some waxoyl underbody seal in the garage  ;D

You know tunnie the answer now is in upcycling, being on trend, so go for that or offer it to the production people of the BBC's Money For Nothing show! ;D ;D ;)

Just clean the rust off and use it, wipe it over with cooking oil each year when it's stored away
better than eating all the chemicals in paint
rust is good for you ,you need iron in your diet  :y
with all my old Vauxhalls, i must be really healthy  :-\

yep  :y
wire brush ,wire wool, even a washing up scratchy will get loose off  :y
but once lit it will be hundreds of degrees anyway ,so any germs will die*

BBQ is meant to be rustic and about the flavours of good food , not paint

*apart from the germs in the food if you don't cook it enough  :-X

Just buy a new one, tight arse.

IF you buy a new one, get it really hot to burn off all the chemicals before use
including that Chinese lead paint etc

once the paint is burnt off, expect rust  ;D

You can buy those gas ones that do the same job as your oven and hob......which is only yards away from the garden anyway, so why bother? Just run in and out of the patio doors with stuff that's actually cooked properly.

Just buy a new one, tight arse.

Had some good memories with this, cooked burgers well. Suspect it will only be used handful of times a year, hence get it going again.

Not being tight, but with wife and 2 kids to support...

I can order food delivered to my door on my computer or phone
BBQ is all about interaction with guests ,drinking beer and nice rustic food, caveman style  ;D

Lizzie is right.

Upcycle it. Make it dual purpose. Dovecote or drinks cabinet perhaps. Then with a flourish open the lid and cook away. The heatwave wont last so you can put it away smartish. Then next year ebay it for £50 and buy a new one for £30.

Lava rock? Sounds like it's not a barbecue but an outdoor gas oven. If so, bin it and either get a barbecue or use the indoor oven. ;)

Out door gas oven yup, for camping trips. While I agree BBQ food via charcoal tastes better, this is bit more practical when out and about.

^^^^
This

If you want to BBQ, then BBQ.  Those small ones don't have room for a smoke box, so you're never going to get anything but a grilled burger...   ...and the oven grill is more effective/cheaper/faster/consistent.
