General Discussion Area / Capacitors
« on: 07 January 2024, 15:11:23 »
Hi,

I need five Aluminium electrolytic capacitors to fix an old DVD player.  Now maplins is no more, I can't seem to find anywhere to get them without paying more than 3x the cost in delivery.

All I need is 2 680uf 6.3v, 2 1500uf 16v and 1 680uf 10v.

Anyone know of a good source near to Milton Keynes area?

General Discussion Area / SKY RF to HDMI
« on: 25 June 2018, 09:18:01 »
Hopefully the OOF brain can help with a problem I need to fix.

I need to convert the RF (via coax) signal from the back of a Sky box into HDMI to provide the input for a projector.

So the cabling is. RF output from Sky box ---> Coax Cable ---> [????] ----> HDMI Cable ---> Projector.

Is this something that can be cheaply achieved?

thanks

General Discussion Area / What web host?
« on: 16 March 2013, 10:58:54 »
Bit of advice sought please. I need to create a simple website that will have database access and maybe some very simple scripts.  I used to be proficiant in VB so will probably use whatever Microsoft flavour is current.

Question is what hosting service is best - an importantly cheap?  JustHost.com looks like it might fit the bill.

Any other suggestions?

cheers

For those that have read my other "oh bugger - The end?" post, you will know that my belt slipped a couple of teeth and required me to get spannering!  The main thing being re-aligning the cams and fitting a new belt.

So I thought it would be worth sharing how I found it.  Bear in mind that the last work I did on a car was 18 years ago, and I made a pigs ear of that! So in the Haynes spanner scale, I would qualify as working up to half a spanner ;D

Firstly, Credits....Massive thanks to....

Theboy       - Came round and spent time stripping down the bits to get to the cambelt and putting on the locking kit!
Robin_hood - Responded to my pathetic plea and took his video camera round to Mark DTMs and recorded the change
of the camblet in Laidback's Elite.

Mark DTM    - The expert in the vid, brilliant commentary on the vid, and responded to all my noddy PMs and posts in
                     the thread. Diamond!
Everyone else who offered advice.

The DVD mentioned is pricess, if you look at the other thread you will see my table of tools, the main one is a laptop with the DVD in it,  Watch - DO - Watch again!

I can honestly say that doing it with the DVD there as backup, I found it EASY to do the belt,  my biggest difficulty was having to keep nipping off to buy tools I didn't have. See list below for what is needed.

So in conclusion, if you are unsure if you are capable of doing a belt kit change, think again,  it is really not that difficult a job (assuming you have Mark on the table next to you showing you how ;)).

Tools needed.

THE V6 LOCKING KIT
The Mark DTM instruction video.
Socket set with extension bar.
Adaptors to accomodate the fact that you will need to use 3/8" bits on 1/2" and vice versa for torque setting.
Torx Sockets, Set comprising E10 - E16 for General use, E20 to turn the crank.
Torx bit TX50 (only need this if you need to manually move the cams i.e the old belt had slipped)
Torque Wrench
30mm Ring spanner for the pullys.
13mm spanner and Allen ket to set the tension.
15mm spanner for the AUX belt tensioner.
Mole grips for the sprung loaded pipe grips.
Rubber mallet to persuade the waper pump to come off.
Screwdrivers etc for the jubilee clips etc.
and some patience.

Hope this may inspire someone to give it a go!

Cheers

Omega General Help / Oh Bugger - The END?
« on: 17 July 2006, 13:52:46 »
On Saturday, driving (slowly) round local roads, there was a horrible noise, then the whole car started shuddering, EM light flashing like mad, then died.
Called the AA out who listned to it, and proclaimed it to sound like the timing belt had slipped and pistons were hitting valves!!! :'(

I have towed it into the local VX garage for confirmation of the actual problem, but working on the assumption that the cambelt has gone what are my best options.

The car is a 1999 V Reg 2.5 Petrol CDX Manual - 135K on the clock, is it likely to have enough value to make it worth repairing?

Do I just walk away and look for a new car? or

What would be of value to remove from the car? bearing in mind that I am no engineer and wouldn't have the tools to remove anything serious.

Any thoughts?

Merv

PS.  In answer to the obvious questions, yes the change was overdue, so my own stupid fault!  Sods law, I spent so long looking for a replacement (how do you replace an omega)! that the basics were being neglected :-[  I hang my head in shame and stand up as a lesson as to why Cambelt changes are a REAL requirement.

Omega General Help / Oh Shit - The End!
« on: 09 November 2006, 19:32:46 »
Driving home yesterday my car broke down! got it towed home by the AA who had a look at it.

Basically what happened was that the pully for the Aux belt tensioner broke up, mangled the Aux belt a good un, and
get this.....

Must have got in behind the cam cover and knocked the timing out to hell.

No compression .. been here before  :'( the pistons have been arguing with the valves again!

A real shame as after Mark, Pete, Jaime, Martin & Chris came round and changed the heads it had been running
really well, I managed to get another 3400 miles out of her that were a dream to drive!

I am not going down that road again, I couldn't do it, and would no way ask people for that level of help again.

So bottom line is that this is really the end!  It will be stuck on ebay as a non runner potential project.  If anyone on here
feels up to the challenge, Robin_hood will have a dvd of how to fix it soon, Make me an offer, but remember it will need to
picked up, it can't be driven.  Can supply photos of the current state of the cams, and it would need a new aux belt tensioner and aux belt obviously.

I'll leave it a couple of days before I ebay it in case anyone on here wants it.

Cheers
Merv

PS: anyone spots a 2.6 (02 or 03) MANUAL cdx or better, drop me a PM.

Omega General Help / Brake fluid flush and change - feedback
« on: 29 August 2006, 21:15:06 »
Tunnie,

Great maint guide!  well done.

Started a new thread so as to keep things tidy.

You have done a great job on describing this really clearly,  only doubt on my part (never having touched brakes before) is the bit about removing the fluid from the calipers.  Not sure I fully got that bit, but then that's probably just me :-[

Give a few months and the H book will be a thing of the past!  :D

Omega General Help / Compression Testing V6
« on: 22 August 2006, 11:29:14 »
I need to test the compression on my 2.5 V6 to see if any valves got bent when the cambelt sipped, but am not sure on how.

Questions..

1.  Will this do the job ?

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10151&productId=199553&categoryId=31477

2.  How do I actually perform the test?  (only ever used one on a single pot motorbike)

3.  How the hell do I get the the passenger side bank??? :o

Many thanks

General Car Chat / Corsa 1.2 twin port - poor fuel economy
« on: 10 September 2011, 12:58:13 »
Hi

My son's 2005 1.2 twin port is getting really poor fuel economy.  It has been serviced etc. The tyres are inflated properly and the driving style is not too bad, he is actually driving like an old man to try and save fuel (£30 doesn't even get 200 miles!)

Is there anything obvious that those in the know would say to check?

General Discussion Area / corsa help - non starter
« on: 20 October 2010, 16:57:13 »
My Son's corsa has a problem, it wont start!
When you turn the key, there is a noise like a child mimicing a machine gun (best description I can come up with ;D), the airbag light flashes (all other lights off), and the car makes no attempt to turn over.  Will do the same if turned over in gear - so is not cranking.

Any ideas?  or anyone know a paperclip test to read the fault codes?

Noticed my desktop is doing a suspicious amount of network activity lately.  I am up to date with virus definitions, but don't have any adaware type software.

What is the best of the free stuff at the moment?

General Discussion Area / ADSL +2 Question
« on: 16 June 2009, 11:50:55 »
I have just switched broadband supplier from Tiscali to O2 to try and improve my rubbish speed (i am 5.8km away from the exchange so can only get 512!).  According to SAMKNOWS, O2 provide ADSL +2 which may be able to provide a faster connection, but should be no worse in any case. and its cheaper!

Question is, given that ADSL +2 uses addition frequencies on the line to increase the bandwidth, do I need to have special filters on the line?

General Discussion Area / Samsung 22" LCD - Opinions
« on: 18 March 2009, 14:53:03 »
My son if after getting one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-T220HD-22-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B0017PBPTC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1237387636&sr=1-3

It is described as a monitor, although it has DTV tuner built-in.  So apart from not being able to watch analogue signals from an arial (which wont be an option much longer), what makes this anything other than a cheap full HD 22" lCD Tv?

Am I missing something.  It will only be used for xbox/ps3 but may want to use it as a tv later?

thoughts?
