X636DWP - 2.6 MV6 Silver Estate. Stretford Manchester
I was about to do some work on the car and was approached by guy who showed genuine interest in the vehicle. Talked for about 20 mins about pros/cons and the work I had done on the vehicle. Had it since 2001. Made the mistake of letting him take it "up the road" for 10 mins while I got other tools and parts from inside house. Not seen it since. I think he was after the wheels as car has no real financial value. Have picture of vehicle and person on my CCTV but unable to attach it to this post.

Commiserations spechr. There are some unprincipled b*stards about! I suppose the police showed no interest? Let's hope someone on here spots it and gets back to you.

hope you reported the theft to the police,I assume it's not insured ,so there is a criminal offence on your part ,allowing someone to drive it :-X
but if you don't report it, you'll be liable for all the speeding tickets ,damage to cars he's crashed into etc
worth contacting any local scrap yards who buy cars to give them a heads up
(the police won't bother)

What a sad indictment of our police force it is that so many people think that they won't bother to investigate such thefts. >:( >:(

The OP gave the guy the keys and allowed him to drive it away.... so he "had consent" to drive off ?? :(
I can see an insurance claim being rapidly refused if one were made .... :(

police don't have the time or resources to investigate genuine theft
as the OP gave the "thief " the keys and his permission to drive it ,I think it then becomes a civil case ,rather than a crime
the crime is no insurance plus whatever other crimes (speeding,ram raids etc) happen

I am surprised to hear someone would actually want to 'steal' / take an Omega, and never heard of that in recent years! :o :o :o
As he said, it must be for another reason, like the alloy wheels: were they non-standard, expensive and suitable for another car? That is why I do not fit anything non-standard to my Omega that is worth more than the rest of the car and is attractive to thieves. Were wheel locking bolts fitted, if so where was the socket for them kept?
The rest of the car, as he said, is virtually worthless to other people, just a liability really. So has it been abandoned locally; a drive around may find it, albeit up on blocks! At least you would have the car back. Cannot envisage anyone driving it any distance, especially as the guy just approached you - on the spur of the moment or planned? If the later he may well be a local. As already said, worth checking with local scrapyards, as not too many Omega's are available for scrapping now! ::) ::) :'( :'(
As for insurance; for an X reg, not much value there as far as the insurance company is concerned beyond your excess! ::) ::) :'(
Anyway, once more sorry for your loss! :'( :'(

I'm sorry that you've had your car stolen and I truly hope you get it back-although I seriously doubt you will-but what on earth were you thinking to hand over the keys to a total stranger and let him "take it up the road"? :o Even I wouldn't do that and I hate my Omega with a passion :-X

If you read subsection 6, I would argue that once the owners consent ceases, i.e. when he realises that the person is not returning with the vehicle, at that point the other person no longer has the consent required and the offence is surely complete.
Another example would be where a person hires a vehicle for a set period i.e. 3 days, and then fails to return it at the end of the hire period, then the person no longer has the owners consent and the offence under S12 of the Theft Act is then committed.
If the person using the vehicle does not have the consent of the owner at any point, and the user obviously knows this by now, surely the offence is complete.
His insurance company may wriggle a lot and probably decline or if lucky only make a reduced payment. Given the probable value of the car, then it may be a bitter pill to swallow, but making an insurance claim may not be a wise move due to subsequent loading of premiums.

A deserved loading as if the person is stupid enough to hand the car to a complete stranger without a second thought, then they are potentially a much higher risk...
