Newbie Welcome Area / Back after a break
« on: 12 June 2020, 18:58:54 »
Hi all, not exactly a new member, but not been on for quite a while.
Omega was off an on the road for a while but has been layed up for the last couple of years. Was hoping to get her back on the road but the sills are rotting, amongst the rest of the rust.
Stayed with vauxhall, but bought another car now in the form of an insignia. Still got the omega, but starting to think she's beyond repair.

General Car Chat / Corsa c issues
« on: 27 February 2018, 21:26:46 »
Evening everyone,

My wife sold her corsa several months ago to a friend of hers where she works. It's been fine until this week when it has started to cut out. When it stops the engine warning light will flicker and you can here the throttle chattering. I have fitted a new earth wire from the engine ecu and it is better but not fixed. The engine light doesn't flicker anymore but the engine does try and die still, engine light comes on solid rather than flicker but the car will then sort its self out and the engine light goes out. Car idles fine but the fault is showing up when you try and rev the car, not every time but a fair amount of the time. Didn't get to read the codes as my computer died before it scanned them. I'll go back to it tomorrow and get the codes if there are any (before I put the new earth on the flickering light didn't register a code). Just after some advice if anyone has any on this car, am worried that if its run without an ecu earth it could have caused issues with the ecu.
Cheers, Al

General Car Chat / Porous wheel
« on: 23 September 2017, 23:54:58 »
Right, slightly different type of help required this time.
I have a friend who has a rather unique historic car and one of its rear wheels had gone badly porous, to the point of can't be properly repaired. So is there a way to seal it so it won't leak air? There must be some sort of epoxy repair these days?
Whilst she can afford to have a new one made, the originality of the car is important. The car does not run competitively any more so the wheel isn't under a lot of stress, just needs to not leak air?
Anyone know of an answer? Preferably near Cheltenham but she will travel for a fix the keeps the original wheel on the car.

General Car Chat / Mercedes misfire
« on: 20 September 2017, 08:33:01 »
Good morning all,

Car is a 2006 r class 3.5 petrol, it was missing badly when cold and when warned up the misfire stopped but it would change revs by itself at idle. My mate was advised to unplug the maf and instantly it ran fine so he fitted a new one. Yesterday it ran fine, but this morning it's missing badly again.
What other difference is there with the maf unplugged other than its using default settings for air and temp.
He's asked if I will go look at it with him tonight but before I go stripping it to component form is like to understand what other faults could be masked by unplugging the maf. I was thinking post maf air leak, but not too sure past that.
It is missing on both banks but only when cold, no misfire when warm. No misfire with the maf unplugged.
Cheers for any pointers,
Al

General Car Chat / Fiesta water pump/cambelt
« on: 09 August 2017, 10:19:32 »
Morning all,

I am about to change the cam belt on the fiesta, its a 2011 and my question is, do I need to change the water pump at the same time. I understand the amount of work argument, but what's the current thinking? Removing a working component just because I'm close to it doesn't exactly make sense, especially if it gets replaced with a non genuine part (I haven't priced the parts either way yet).

General Car Chat / Peugeot 206 keys locked in the car
« on: 19 May 2017, 09:14:47 »
Morning, my little brother has locked the keys in his car, he had a bad connection on the battery and when he moved the battery cable it locked the central locking.
Does anyone know if it's possible to unlock the car from under the bonnet as he still has the bonnet open.
He isn't the most mechanically gifted but is going to try and see if he can get to the button on the key as is in the ignition barrel.
Just thought I would ask in case there is a way from the engine bay.

General Car Chat / Non starting corsa
« on: 26 February 2017, 15:50:01 »
Hi everyone, sorry but I've not been on here much lately, the estate is say on the drive waiting for sunny weather so I can weld the sills up for the mot.
Anyway, the wife's corsa c 1.4 twinport has suddenly decided to be a bugger to start when is cold. It tries to fire but doesn't catch fire the first 8 or so tries, when it does start it takes a few seconds to fire on all counts bit then runs spot on and can be stopped and restarted fine until it's been sat for an hour or so. There is pressure in the fuel rail, coolant is showing as 8*, coil has been temporarily swapped with a known good one, plugs are new, compression in all cylinders is good and no fault codes are showing.
Anyone have any ideas? It's frustrating as its not all the time so it's hard to track down and I don't want to go buying parts just cause.

General Car Chat / clit diesel head gasket
« on: 10 May 2016, 22:24:23 »
Anyone have any knowledge of the clit 1.5dci?
Friend has recently bought a 2002 version and it over heated on him so he asked me to have a look. It seems like a failure as its pressurizing the coolant lines pretty much as soon as you start it, although it's not smoking at all and the oil and coolant are clear. I had bled it first but it just keeps pushing bubbles into the expansion tank.
A quick look round the internet seems to suggest it's an 8 hr job and while I was initially happy to change it for him if needed, I'm not sure how many days it will take me to put 8 hrs into it, he obviously needs his car sorting cheaply, but I can't commit to doing it for him if it is going to take me over a week.
Is it going to take 8hrs or is that just google talk?

General Car Chat / Focus tdci starter
« on: 25 February 2016, 17:19:43 »
Hi guys,

Wife's 1.8 tdci has a starting fault developing. Sometimes the car starts fine but other times the engine will spin over a couple of times then the starter keeps spinning but stops spinning the engine. You can hear the starter spinning, a simple off on with the key will normally get the engine spinning again but not always. Battery has plenty of v in it, although I haven't tested it with a load yet, but that said, even after a couple of goes, when the starter does turn the engine is turns fine and starts the car.
Car had a recon starter last year, but it was an eBay buy.
My feeling is is the starter or starter solenoid rather than the battery, was hoping someone has an actual answer, as I'm not very electrical minded.

General Car Chat / vectra B headlights
« on: 05 January 2016, 13:52:46 »
Long shot I know, but by any chance are the vectra b xenon headlight motors and level sensors the same as the omega ones? Thinking that as they are the same age car I might be lucky.

General Car Chat / Corsa 1.3 cdti
« on: 01 June 2015, 14:01:41 »
Brother in laws corsa has decided to not start, the only code showing is p0340 for cam sensor. It has 5v at the sensor plug but i have no idea how to test the sensor.
Is this likely to be the crank sensor at fault, I was having a trawl of old posts and was wondering if a failed cam sensor would stop it starting or is it more likely to be the crank sensor failed and is not showing a code and the cam sensor code is a red herring.
Any advice would be great.

General Car Chat / how is misfire code generated
« on: 23 February 2015, 16:18:16 »
Hi all,

As per the title, I would assume the ECU is picking something up as I am getting a cylinder 2 misfire code on a petrol Audi a2 1.4 petrol. Question is how does it pick up a misfire on a particular cylinder, car doesn't show any symptoms of a misfire and has just  flown through an emissions test. It does have quite a tappety noise from cylinder 2 but other than it drives great. Plugs and leads have  swapped for diagnosis but code remains but without knowing how the code is generated I am at a bit of a loss for way to go with it now.

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / wanted: estate fuel pipe
« on: 27 October 2014, 20:57:40 »
Hi all, as per title, I need the fuel pipe that goes into the fuel filter (from the tank to the filter). Not sure where the next break up to the tank is, but I have broken mine where it meets the filter.
Don't suppose it matters but it is for a pre facelift.

Omega General Help / facelift door mouldings
« on: 26 October 2014, 12:42:35 »
As my mouldings on my superior pre facelift are starting to lift i was thinking about swapping to facelift ones ones. But then the front bumper would be out of place, so what is the normal way forward in that regard. An irmscher bumper is to rare/expensive and the facelift ones are just wrong IMO.
So what would the general advise be please?

General Discussion Area / Who is responsible for the land..
« on: 02 July 2014, 19:59:16 »
..at the side of my house?

Council say it is highways, highway say it was never passed to them, so it is still the original developer.

I am no expert, but as they built the houses in the 1960's, I dont fancy my chances of them turning up. Highways said best bet was to ask whoever it is maintains the land currently. The council cut the grass but that is as far as it goes and after another call to them they say that the grass cutting will up to now have been done by mistake.

The problem is the tree that is growing there is now pushing over the garden wall and needs sorting, so, as there can be a knowledgeable bunch in here, of occasion, I thought I would ask where I stand. I am sure the answer will end up that I have to sort it (I did mention to the council that if that was the case I was fencing it off and building a garage).
If it is up to the home owner because of some oversight that will be fine, the RAF own the house, but I know I will have a fight getting them to do it so I would like to have some idea/backup for when I go to bat with them.

Then again, maybe it is best to not tell anyone and just fence it off and create my own little garage/world that no-one knows exists, as long as none of you tell SWMBO where I have disapeared to that is.

Seriously though, if anyone has any idea where I (or the homeowner) stand your advise would be welcome along side the rest of the comments.
