Newbie Welcome Area / Back after a break
« on: 12 June 2020, 18:58:54 »
Hi all, not exactly a new member, but not been on for quite a while.
Omega was off an on the road for a while but has been layed up for the last couple of years. Was hoping to get her back on the road but the sills are rotting, amongst the rest of the rust.
Stayed with vauxhall, but bought another car now in the form of an insignia. Still got the omega, but starting to think she's beyond repair.

Would coil pack issues still show up just on ignition? No codes on the computer, can't pedal trick it as it keeps shutting down the ecu when you press the throttle.
Since I put the extra earth wire on the ecu it seems better, but still has issues when you move the throttle sometimes.  When plugged into the code reader and you move the pedal it will disconnect from the reader. Definitely seems electrical somewhere, like I said, I'm worried the bad earth has goosed the ecu.

Yeah, the diff really doesn't like odd/non BMW approved/worn tyres. You can get away with it if you've just fitted them and take them straight back off, but it doesn't seem to take long to bust the diff if you run it like that. Only way to tell is fit new, BMW approved tyres on all 4 corners and try it.
Often the knocking shows up at town speeds when coming on/off the throttle.

Cheers Zirk, have read that it needs the full kit, but online auction site sellers claim you just need the ecu and tech 2 to program it. If you don't have the ability to program it then you need the full set. Just wary of taking advice from unknown sellers who want your money.

What's required to change the engine ecu? I'm happy with the physical work, but does the replacement ecu need to be unpaired from the old car before removal or can the car just be recoded once fitted as long as I get the code for it.
Google is a mixture of replace the bm, clocks, keys etc also, but that seems excessive.
Cheers Al

Yeah, already put another earth from the ecu to the battery and it isn't quite the same fault after. My worry is the lack of earth has done damage to the ecu. When I first looked at it there were no fault codes, not sure after the new earth lead will look tomorrow. Like I said, the ecu warning light doesn't flicker anymore but does come on and go off while the car tries to cut out. The engine doesn't cut out now but doesn't really like to be revved and is definitely trying to cut out.
Not bothered about selling the car to them, there is no pressure or expectation that I need to fix it but I've always helped out with friends/family cars as a hobby anyway.
It's a 3 cylinder petrol.

No, not a problem but she is a friend of my wife so naturally I'm going to help out if I can. I will be supplied with beer for trying to sort it.

General Car Chat / Corsa c issues

Evening everyone,

My wife sold her corsa several months ago to a friend of hers where she works. It's been fine until this week when it has started to cut out. When it stops the engine warning light will flicker and you can here the throttle chattering. I have fitted a new earth wire from the engine ecu and it is better but not fixed. The engine light doesn't flicker anymore but the engine does try and die still, engine light comes on solid rather than flicker but the car will then sort its self out and the engine light goes out. Car idles fine but the fault is showing up when you try and rev the car, not every time but a fair amount of the time. Didn't get to read the codes as my computer died before it scanned them. I'll go back to it tomorrow and get the codes if there are any (before I put the new earth on the flickering light didn't register a code). Just after some advice if anyone has any on this car, am worried that if its run without an ecu earth it could have caused issues with the ecu.
Cheers, Al

Omega General Help / Re: Self levelling suspension woes

Post 1998 sensors are diagnosable, does your diags gear cover that, or just engine?

Are they diagnosable for the suspension? I know they feed into the abs/tc with some extra wires but I thought it was still just a direct line into the pump side of things. Though if it sees the arm moving for the abs side of things I suppose that means it would be a wire/connection fault somewhere or am I wrong? I wired a later switch into my pre FL a few years back as it was all I could find at the time but I can't remember exactly what the difference was.

There is a plug break forward of the fuel tank, above the exhaust at least on my pre FL estate there was.
Mine had corroded then got hot and melted a bit so the pump was doing weird things.
Not sure where else there were plug breaks as that was the first one I found and it was the issue so I didn't look further.

General Car Chat / Re: Porous wheel
« on: 26 September 2017, 20:19:20 »
She has many more cars than just that one and they all get to go out and play. She isn't one for locking them away so no-one else can see them.
As she puts it they are only hers for now, someone else will own then when she's gone and it would be unfair to hide them from people who would like to see them. She let's her gardener borrow her e-type!
I will look into getting the wheel in with ultraseal, so at least it can be presented in its original condition and she can sort getting some replacements made for when she runs it in anger.
Thanks for the info

Cheers, I will look them up. The wheels racing days are clearly over and I guess the others are not far behind add they are all the same age. Putting 350 HP through a weakened wheel isn't the best plan.
I think they are all off for an X-ray, I know the leaky one has already been. I think the issue is getting a company to stop it leaking is hard as they will assume it will be driven in anger so won't want to take liability.
Maybe time to admit defeat and just replace it, however she is still refusing to use an electric fuel pump to get her alpha Romeo around and is still using the 1920's vacuum feed, with all the problems that generates with modern fuel.
Like she says though, cars are only original once and when you start changing them, where do you stop.

Yes, I think it's a magnesium wheel. It's a Mclaren M3A, one of only 3 built and the only one surviving, one is unknown, one is in parts in Australia or New Zealand they think.
Other than that I don't know exactly what wheel is fitted, other than it is what came with the car when it was sold after Patty's death and is what it was displayed with when it was loaned to a museum after she retired.
