Isn't the XF Sportbrake only available with the derv engine-and only the small one at that?

You can get a 550 BHP petrol XFR-S  Sportbrake (estate)

Also XF-S 3.0 Diesel, full fat version in Estate trim.
Obviously one is quick though.  The other not so ;)

Although I think the max torque figures are not wildly different.

One makes a noise like the end of the world the other sounds like a Leyland bus. :)

Though both sound better than a bunch of Lipos and a Tamiya 540...

Have you considered a SEAT. The exeo and Leon estates look quite smart and are cheaper than their VW equivalents.

Though sadly have the same reliability problems...   ...although laws of statistics mean the vast majority should be OK

I think Skoda Superb would be high up on my list as well, just £6k gets you a decent spec, sub 80k miles and DSG. Although I would have some concerns around that, changing the fluid looks a faff as well, stripping airbox and battery, battery floor etc, just to reach the filter. Filling it as well, is no picnic.

VCDS is a big plus as well, it so easily gives all data/programming/scanning needs.

Diags would not be a deciding factor on any car I was going to buy.  TBH, you can get half decent diags equipment on virtually any brand for sub £300...  ...and for those reprogramming to accommodate new modules, that's why the dear Lord invented the £20 bung ;)

For eg, everyone here knows I have a pretty comprehensive GM diags capability. But I can't see me having another GM vehicle any time soon.

Can sell it to me then, as I would strongly consider an Insignia for 3.2 replacement. Even with this issue, DIY servicing is straight forward.

and I can't knock their value for money....

When you say Insignia I'm sure you refer to the 2.8V6 turbo Insignia and not some smoky diesel. :)

Nope, as I refuse to pay £500 a year to tax a car.

I'd seek out the 170bhp "whisper" variant of the 2.0 diesel, in Elite trim. Probably an Estate as well.

£500 is actually £535 or £568 when paid monthly. :-\

......on the plus side the mighty Signum costs £160 PA to insure. The Tata £300.

I’ve got some way to go before a 5.0 V8 is that cheap to unsure!

Those Skoda forums are very good from what I’ve seen, lots of tech knowledge and guides.

Which was more impressive, the way it drove or the replacement cost?

We run an Ateca and are very happy with it, only the 1.0 Ecomotive but it's still quite nippy and regularly gives 50 + Mpg
