HP 1510 not accepted as Default in Windows 10
« on: 21 June 2020, 17:02:53 »

Under duress, I recently upgraded to Win 10, and, unlike Win 7, it will not accept my HP 1510 printer as default. I have spent untold hours chasing down suggestions from Google to no avail. Can any of the IT experts here tell me how to fix this infuriating fault. >:( >:( >:(

The quick answer would be to remove any HP printer software and driver and then re-install, preferably a fresh download from HP to ensure (haha) you have the latest version.

Presumably 64bit?

Windows is trying to lose the concept of default printer, as now it shouldn't be needed (and its a pain most of the time, compared to letting apps or even documents decide the best printer).  64bit is further allow this concept than 32bit (that absolutely must maintain it for 16bit apps, which can't run on 64bit).

Any reason why you want it to be a "default printer"?

I forgot about a tick-box "Let Windows manage my defualt printer"

Turn it off;

Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Box below the available printers - Uncheck.

Sorry for the delay, due to trying establish what I meant :-[

It will print a letter using my WP, Textmaker, with no problem, however when I try to scan a document to email it advises "Scan to email application not found."

Answers to the replies above:

1. I downloaded the latest printer software when I installed 10 recently.

2. The PC is running 64bit, and I assume that the printer needs it to be the default in order for it to work with all applications, including scanning to eMail.

3. I tried unticking the box BM suggested, but it makes no difference, still get the same message.

Any further options to resolve this? Other than paying HP to ask a question.

No advice but I can offer sympathy . :'(
I too went over into the dark side of Win10 from 7 recently and can say that so far it has been a thoroughly underwhelming experience .

Agreed, 7 was simple, even for me to use. 10 is far too complex.  :-[

That is a very different problem from what you asked, and likely totally unrelated to defaults....

What email program did you use on windows 7, and what email program do you use now?  Ive a feeling the printer wont scan to windows 10 mail, but can use some programs like thunderbird.

Somewhere in the HP Scan app you (probably) installed should give the option to set it up.

did you install the basic driver, or full printer software package?
