Adapter for MID
« on: 26 May 2015, 14:40:41 »

Just wondered if I'm the first to think an adapter not unlike this...

That could plug between a (more reliable) FL MID and the original PFL loom. Knowing less about electrics than a Hermit does about the January Sales, I'm in unfamiliar territory, but on principle the idea seems sound.

As far as I can tell it's as simple as

1 MID from scrap FL Omega
2 Plug and length of loom from scrap FL Omega
3 The socket from a broken PFL MID.
4 Smash the PFL MID apart and connect the FL wires to the appropriate parts of the PFL socket
5 Plug 'n' play

Everything appears simple apart from this bit-
"Smash the PFL MID apart and connect the FL wires to the appropriate parts of the PFL socket"
And therein lies the part where I suspect I shall come unstuck!

Anyone got any thoughts?

The wiring diagrams are in the Haynes Book of Boolax.

The "early models" wiring diagrams cover early PFL (to 1997), which have the earlier MID. The "later models" wiring covers 1998 and 1999 cars, which have the later MID.

The plug and socket is basically an IDC connector with a latching shroud attached.

I've found the appropriate wiring diagrams, and it's all a bit beyond me; however I know a guy who's an ex-GPO technical whizz, I'm going to see if he can sort anything out like that. With the wiring diagrams, a broken MID and a scrap bit of loom I can't see it posing him much a problem. (hope not, anyway!)

Omegod - just to save any Tech2-ing, I'm aiming to get a 2.5 V6 Auto MID - if yours is the same may me interested...  ;)

As far as I'm aware, any MID can be made to work, given some Tech2. Like I say, far as I'm aware. TB is the chap to ask, however.  :y

All MIDs are fully configurable.  I posted up the early MID code indexes a few years back.  Later ones have a lot more options, so easier to look up when needed.

Ahh, brilliant. I will try and arrange a 'free/cheap as chips' later MID then, if a perfect match doesn't arise. Also - as far as I'm aware - in order to bring up my 'specs' I just hold in both buttons above the MID for 5 seconds and this brings up said specs. Tried this the other day and nothing, only the clock went blinking onto 'set' mode. Tried a couple of times, is it just pilot error?

This is the adapter i made several months ago using the plugs and sockets from the original MID.

Some functions work fine time/day/date/outside temp but range/consumption/brake test don't.
Have read it could be that my car is an early '95 model which needs a speedo head mod and a later fuel tank sender.
