symptoms of coil pack breaking down?
« on: 26 April 2016, 23:47:36 »

Hi Guys.

Whats the classic symptoms of a coil pack starting to break down on a 2.5?

I was giving the omega a bit of welly on the way home tonight and as it got to about 4300rpm it baulked on the throttle and wouldnt pull past those revs started missing heavily as if hitting a limiter. i backed off and went to go again but as i was coming up to roundabout had to back off and didnt get it back up that high in revs again.
I had this problem a couple of years ago when i tried fitting a longer plenum set up whereby every time i went to full throttle it did the same. Changed back to the shorter plenum again and its been ok since revving freely.
As its got 168k on it and 18 years old i wondered if it would be the coil pack starting to break down as its still the original?

TIA.

EML didnt come on Andy so i doubt there would be anything to read. Just held back and missed as if on a limiter.

there could still be a code 19  ;) though when my crank sensors failed, the car did too  ;)

I would expect misfiring at low revs on full throttle with either dodgy coil pack leads or plug leads, rather than cutting out at 4300. That's about the rpm when the front dual ram opens, though I doubt that is relevant. Cutting out could be fuel starvation, I've known that on Omegas, caused by kinked fuel pipe near filter, blocked filter, failing fuel pump, or blocked tank breather.

When mine were going it would splutter with gentle acceleration. When I was at high revs or heavy acceleration the car was fine.

I also had a fault code of miss fire with the old flash codes on the dash.

Assume your car is pfl or mfl - if so won't throw any codes for failing coil pack.

When mine packed up, had distinct misfire under gentle or hard acceleration.

When the coilpack went on my FL it didnt put the EML on... but did misfire - heavily....

If its stopped revving past 4300, its possibly a sensor issue rather than a coipack issue, but wouldnt hurt if the coilpack got changed... sounds like a cam sensor failure to me...
