When you've got it all back together, take it for a spin to Brakkers, as it'll have fault codes stored in every orifice...

I think you should be able to remove the regulator with it still fitted but be careful you don't lose any nuts  ::)

 ;D ;D ;D

Absolutely no chance of swapping the regulator with the alternator still in the car. Easy job once you have it out and on the bench though :y
Do you mind me asking where you got your regulator from Andy as I'm struggling to locate one.  :-\
I wanted to get a genuine Bosch regulator but I couldn't get one quick enough so I bought a pattern one from an old school alternator repair shop that was in walking distance of the office.

Thanks for the info.  :y I'll whip it off tomorrow so that I have a part number to look for as I'm going around in circles without it.  ;D :y

Cheers for that, very much appreciated.  :y

All sorted now hopefully and running at 14.2 again.  :y

Regulator arrived so I've put it all back together and the old girl is running again.  :y  Thanks to all for the input, with a special thanks to tigers_gonads for the check method, RobG and Andy H for the links and TB for his offer.  :y
Used RobG's link in the end and got a genuine Bosch replacement regulator. The guy at Mid-Ulster Rotating Electrics Ltd was very helpful as they didn't stock the part but had it sent to me direct from the supplier. It arrived in record time as well so top marks to them.  :y

Big Black is back.  :y

For info, the only items that ever need servicing on them is the bearings (standard parts and easy to change), the brushes and slip rings just don't wear (hardly any current passing through them so spring load is very light).

Only real failure mechanism is the regulators as you have found  :y
