As I've posted in electrical help I've had the car running today[for other issues] and the temp gauge went to just over 85 and the fans kicked in dropping the reading to half way between the bottom of the gauge and 80[so 75?]before the fans cut out again.Does this sound ok or do I need to replace the thermostat? Or could it be the sender that's iffy?Must admit I'm happy that the fans operate and stop it overheating.

If it runs OK, doesn't lose water and the fans cut in and out, why would you bugger about with it?
Find something that's actually broken, and fix that.

What you say makes sense, Nick, but I can also see Baza's concern; the system seems to be running a bit on the cool side, with its implications for fuel economy and winter heating.
Maybe the temperature sensor is a bit bozwonk?

Could be a diff switch on the radiator as that's what usually triggers the fans :y
But as said, if they cut in and the gage shows the temperature dropping, then all is good :y

I'm not one for fixing stuff for the sake of it just wanted to make sure it was running properly and not just ok.The two radiator switches were both brand new[one or both could still be faulty I suppose]however it seems I can leave this alone for now at least.

Could be a number of things, needs live data, else its guesswork

On all Omegas, temp guage should sit just below midpoint when cruising, and stage 1 fans on just after midpoint.
Midpoint's actual value varies with age of car

The practical difference between those is entirely dependent on your tolerance for faffing about. If you like spending hours doing tedious crap to make no difference to how it works, then go for it. But I have some more paint drying that you could watch for a better result.

Car was first registered 1st March 2000 and is a F/L 3L.Will keep an eye on gauge when cruising-it was stood nose in to the rear wall of the garage and running on tickover when I saw these readings this morning.

I mean with everything working as it should.
Yours is a FL, so your midpoint is 90C, so with A/C off, cruising should be around 87/88C, and stage 1 fans kick in around 92C, and stage 2 fans around 95C
(Figures as given by dash gauge - reality is a whole different ball game)

A/C was off[it's never worked]so it would seem the fan
are kicking in early and cooling it too much[if I'm understanding you right]or the gauge for some reason is misreading.

Was 2000 the year when they changed from MF 3.0 to the FL 3.2?
