Lightened flywheel

I have been looking at the courtenay website for the lightened balanced billet steel flywheel and noticed that it says that the omega will need a different clutch and different fixings? any ideas why? And do any of you guys know who else does a lightened flywheel?

No Omega experience personally but usually a lightened flywheel has had thickness taken off the clutch face to leave the starter ring in roughly the same place, meaning that the clutch sits further towards the engine. This means you need a deeper clutch cover or to fit a spacer to the release bearing to restore proper operation of the clutch. Of course, they may have engineered it to take an uprated or larger clutch during the process.

I'd be wary of lightened standard flywheels if you find them offered for sale. They can burst if they're left insufficiently strong, and if this happens at high revs it will write off the car from the inside out (and your ankles if you're unlucky).

Omegas have dual-mass flywheels - not sure how easy it is to just shave some metal off it....

Removing material from a dual mass flywheel just f***s it up. Presumably you'll be sold a standard type solid flywheel and a damped clutch.

sorry totally disagree :-[

i have 1 in mine ...... its a prototype ish .... takes standard clutch :y standard fixings :y...... have halved weight from 15kg to just over 6kg :o ... and what a difference :y rev's better/easier, drives smoother higher up revs.... and is no longer a duel mass!!!! :y

i can prob get you one.. made from billet steel if interested??????? :y

But will add ..... not so smooth lower down rev range.....

but have to say does just what i want it to....... but mine is a track car....... :-/

Ive got a Courtenay one in mine and its great. The Dual Mass flywheel overall is about 2.5 inches thick, the lightened one is about 1/2 an inch thick so you need shorter bolts (off a vectra V6) to fit it with. You also need to use a vectra clutch because the edge of the standard friction plate is very very close to the new flywheel edge so you need a bit more clearance, again i've put one in mine and theres no difference and i drive mine hard.

Well....you cant lighten a dual mass fly wheel....

So, use a Vectra or Cavalier V6 flywheel, get it lightened and fit the vectra or cavalier clutch setup....you shouldn't use the Omega clutch friction plate as it has no damping springs in it (the dual mass fly wheel does the job of these).

And dont go to courtney.....WAY over priced.

agree with the over priced bit!!!!!! they really are ......

but no idea what all this different clutch stuff is .... my mate owns motorsport engineering firm and has made me one from scratch using mine as a template..... all i had to do was get hold of some different mounting bolts that was it :y used same clutch same plate same everything....

I know he has 1 on the shelf ::)......... as he made 2 when he did mine.........  :-/

i think they are great!!!!! :y ;D

talking of which here are a couple pics of mine my mate sent me while he was doing it... :y

Are you sure? Identical X25XE were fitted to both Veccy and Meega

90% sure, when i rang vauxhall for the bolts for the v6 vectra they only had six, they said thats all the veccies took.

Its quite simple......the clutch friction plate normaly has a spring assembly in it to act as a cush drive so when you transfer power from the flywheel to the input shaft of the gearbox, any sudden shock is removed which protect the drive train......

On the Omega, the friction plat does not haev these springs as the dul mass flywheel does the job....

If you replace the flywheel with a standard non dual mass item....and use the standard friction plate (i.e. no springs in it!)...the drive train gets the full brunt....and you can imagine what that does to the transmission etc...
