How do these places arrive at their prices?
My daughter's Fiat 52 plate Seicento's exhaust is embarrassingly knackered ..... back box is goosed. As a starting point, I phoned the dealers, £200 + vat he says, but he'd knock the vat off.
Kwik Fit want £150 fitted, and National Tyres want £177 'including 30% discount' .... he wasn't impressed when I laughed at him and told him it was only just cheaper than the main dealer's prices without a 'discount'. ???
Price at a mate's motorfactor ........... £37 + vat :y :y :y

They rely on uk public apathy and a "just get it done" attitude.
Plus the refusal to get ones hands dirty AndyB ;) ;D

If your daughter had phoned herself they'd magic up a quote that was twice as expensive.
A lone woman who doesn't know an exhaust from a spark plug is easy prey for these guys. :-\

Exhaust place quoted my daughter £350 for fitting and supplying an exhaust for a 03 Corsa >:( >:(

Yep.....my exact point precisely demonstrated. Unsupervised women are easy meat for the sharks in the motor trade. :'(

Mrs Opti wouldn't hesitate to pay three times would I to have her car fixed.
Like lambs to the slaughter. : ::) ::) ::)-\

Mrs TB was quoted £46 for a backbox on the Rover at Hellfords Autocentres. As the factors wanted £37, plus the gasket, sod it, I took it in, and confirmed the price when I dropped it off. All good.
Got a call about an hour later, it was going to be over £200, and the parts were ordered, so I politely told them not to do it. "But we've ordered the parts?". Words to the effect of what a shame was my reply.
Anyways, go down to pick up the car, and asked why price had jumped 4.5 times the quote. The backbox is £1xx (as it was different to quoted) and the mid section is £1xx.
I reminded them that there was only one backbox fitted to this car, which they denied, and refused my request to look at their books/computer to prove. Quizzed about mid section, "rusted through completely". I asked them to put that in writing, as it was only about a year old, thus I'd still have a warranty on it, but they refused.
Strangely enough, the customers behind me all left :y
So off to factors, new backbox on in less than 10 mins.

Just fitted new back box to rover,5 min job and cost £21 :y

I could have got a backbox cheaper online, but needed it quick, hence Motorserv. 15mins includes getting jacks and stands out ;)

Same as me, however it arrived at the motor factors when I was enroute to Manchester to collect said daughter from work because I had her car! :y

Her old Volvo v40. Failed mot on split cat.
For the laugh, I thought I'd see what they said;
kwirk fart = Just shy of £500 for a new cat fitted.
Welded up at a back street place round the corner for £10.

I had an old Volvo 440. The guy in Kwik fit said they were the most expensive exhaust they did.

I've worked in big factories (Vauxhall Ellesmere Port) and small factories. In the small factories the fitters just fixed everyone's car. ;D

Probably because the small factories allowed you to drive their cars round to the work shop :y Quite a few cars were fixed at Hall's cough sweets factory, none though at Wigan :(
