Title: Probable power sounder issue - quick bit of advice needed
Post by: Viral_Jim on 22 August 2017, 10:53:53
I have the old bus back with me for one week only to move some scaffolding around.

Last night at around 3am, the alarm started blaring and the horn sounding, flashing indicators etc. I locked and unlocked with the fob, but 20mins later, off it went again  ::). The only way to stop it going off was to open with the fob, lean in from the offside rear door and lock the front door from the inside, then shut the rear door.

I figure this is the power sounder issue which is often mentioned, however when I was reading a thread on the oldsite, Gixer mentioned that this can also be triggered by issues with interior sensors, under bonnet sensor etc.

My question is, will removing the power sounder stop the alarm going off regardless of the original cause? If not, what other steps should I take to ensure a silent night?

Thanks,
Jimmy

PS. for reference, its a 2.2 petrol auto estate on an 03 plate :)|

If the power sounder is removed and that's not what's triggering it, it'll still sound on the horn only. The power sounder will be well past it, however, so whatever the cause is, it'll be better off without it.

Tech 2 can tell you what triggered the alarm, but I'd remove the power sounder as a starter for 10. :y

Unplug the Bonnet Sensor to see if this cures it, if yes then fix the sensor issue.

Personally I would ditch the Power Sounder anyway, they can go bang and cause a fire.

Thanks chaps.

I'll whip the power sounder out and ditch the bonnet switch this evening and see what happens.  :y

Could also have been a mosquito or summat buzzing around inside :-\ but removing the power sounder is not a bad idea on any level ;)

I saw a dragonfly earlier that would give a sparrow a fight...

If I recall correctly the sensors in the rear windows of estates can cause problems - might be relevant if you have been chucking stuff into the back of the car :-\

Also - When I had dogs I used to be able to disable the interior sensors in my 1994 Omega by pressing the button on the dash before locking the car. I assume that later cars work the same way :-\

Yup, same in this one. I pressed it last night, haven't tested it independently of loving the doors by hand as described above. As it was 3.30am and I had to be up at 5.15, I was disinclined to experiment  ;D. I'll have a look when I have some more time later this week.

Thanks for the tip on the rear window sensors, the folks have a pair of 'orrible Woolley muts which may have dislodged something.

As said, I'll pull the powersounder regardless.

The wiring simply clips onto the window glass at the front lower corners iirc... if present, should clip back on with minimal fuss :y

My removing the Powersounders on two Omegas never caused the horn to activate, but when the key stopped working other than manually the flashers activated when the drivers door was opened until cancelled by switching on the ignition. Annoying but tolerable, (just).

Right, this arvo I pulled the power sounder and the accompanying horn. I also disconnected the bonnet switch and checked the rear glass sensors (no issues noted there). When I cut the unit open, batteries looked in good nick, so no imminent fires there.   :o

Not sure what worked, but the alarm isn't going off now (obviously there wouldn't be any noise, but no indicator flashes either). Considering it was going off every 5-10mins, I think we have a cure  :).

Thanks for your help everyone. OOF magic once again  :y

I had a powersounder issue when my '96 Elite was only a few months old.

Alarm started going off as I was driving down the M1. Drive it straight to my dealer who didn't seem very happy to see me  ::).

Turned out it was water that had gotten into the powersounder somehow or other - so it was replaced

I would guess that the bracket for the bonnet switch has slowly bent downwards allowing the switch to release.
