how does one decide on how often to check the oil levels. If there appears to be no leakage do you leave well alone or check at regular intervals. I had mine checked roughly 13,000mls ago and feel that it is time to check again any thoughts.Haynes states 70,000 mls change gear box oil and filter?

If it aint broke and works as it should ...leave well alone. :y
Its a messy nasty job so I would be in no hurry to venture under there ;D

Given the frequency of problems reported with the autobox on here, I would stick with the OOF recommended maintenance as detailed here. From personal experience it is worth doing. :y

It sounds much worse than it is to do, I have done it several times on different boxes, and while it can, but need not, be messy, it is very straightforward. I would emphasise the requirement that the car must be level to check the oil level, and it is possible to pump the oil around the system while still on stands/ramps by exercising the gear shift with engine running to allow the system to ensure the oil fills the system. Certainly it is sensible to check the level again after some miles.
HTH
PS I am unable to find the OOF recommended mileage for an ATF change, but IIRC it was 60k. :y

In my opinion, it doesn't do any harm to check the levels once a year. I checked the diff and box recently and the box took just under half a litre of ATF. Ive thought about changing the fluid in the autobox as the car has covered a lot of miles, but it operates perfectly well, so I'm in no hurry.

Depending on time/equipment constraints the auto gearbox filter is a re-usable item.Take it off, clean it out, dry it and refit it.I did change the filter on mine but cleaned the old one and dried it then stored it for any future fluid change,based purely on the need to get the car back on the road and the old filter could take as long as it wanted to dry out.

Not getting under there at my age( a chap locally died when his car fell on him)Booked in for the garage to do.

Absolute tosser then ;D

well thats just silly.. guessing you dont service your engine then as it runs fine?? (if it aint broke dont fix)doing it is called preventative maintenance
gearbox fluid brakes down just like anything.. and job isnt hard to to.. remove two gearbox pans drain oil swap filter replace gasket (x2) and replace amount of fluid removed with new fluid.. yes not all will be replaced but a good percentage will be (you can go further by using coller lines to drain system fully...) .. once this done a couple of times most of old fluid will be gone and gearbox will be thankful for it and should make a much smoother box..
my dad left his never having it done from buying it at 70k to 120k i persuaded him to do it .. wasnt expensive
and drives so much better .. gearbox better when cold and smoother. on a 132k now and going to do it again just so more of it replaced and add a little lucas oil modifiy for autoboxs

changed oil in Diff and gearbox and car seems to run better why would that be?

Yes, strange that. ::)

It's the elf's you know ;D

I spoke to my garage about the better performance and they said that especially with auto boxes the oil changes viscosity as miles are increased and a change of oil can make a large difference.
