Title: Mustang For Sale - $4.5 million
Post by: Lizzie Zoom on 03 December 2017, 14:09:12
Under General Car Chat we have been discussing the merits of the Ford Mustang, a great car in V8 form.

But how about this Mustang, with a Merlin engine (of course!!)?

The P51 was a brilliant aircraft, the Merlin[licence built by Packard]one of the best piston aero engines of them all.It had range to escort the "heavies" on their deep penetration raids and the manoeuvrability to hold its own against Germanys best.Still in use in the Korean war I believe?Armed with the .50cal that the yanks seemed so wedded to for such a long time.

Yes, they made all the difference to protecting the US 8th Army B17 bombers all the way to Germany and back, the first fighters to do that. Their belated introduction, after intitial hesitation by the US Command, stopped the horrific losses seen up to this time of B17's and their crews during their infamous daylight raid policy. Only the eventual introduction by the Luftwaffa of the ME262's in significant numbers in late 1944 / early 1945 became a new threat, but by then it was too late. Only 300 ME262's were commissioned out of 1400 built, and by then there was a grave shortage of fuel, parts and pilots within the Third Reich, and many were just abondoned.

Yes, the Mustang served in Korea, and I once knew an American friend who flew these as well as the jets that took over during that war.   ;)

One of my favourite bits of Goodwood Revival is going around the old planes as well as seeing them fly (usually the Mustang, Spitfires and, year before last, Lancaster) - beautiful sight, amazing sound.

Sothebys had an aircraft auction this year, too .. I decided I'd be the bigger man and let someone else take home a new toy, though ;) ;D

I read some years ago about a bloke[or was it two blokes?]who fitted a Merlin engine into a Rolls Royce Phantom III[which were V12 engine from the factory]and was well chuffed when after much tinkering/setting up managed to improve the fuel consumption from 2mpg to 3 mpg :o

There's a Meteor (the land-bound Merlin) engine in a Rover SD1 - in fact if memory serves it's been doing the rounds for probably a decade now: https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1089032_27-liter-rolls-royce-powered-rover-sd1-hits-160-mph-video

Sounds like it could be John Dodd's car. IIRC, Rolls Royce sued him for using their logo on the grille. ;D

You're thinking of The Beast, which has been around since the seventies and now lives in Spain.
