General Car Chat / Re: Breakdown cover
« on: 21 February 2024, 21:48:23 »
Called out the RAC a week ago - no crank on my Merc CL500, 1/2 mile from home.

I can't believe how much the RAC have declined (as TB warned!).  Help line is crap - you need a computer or smart phone with internet connection to just log a call, otherwise they make it very difficult to do it just by voice phone.

Warning message on phone line wait gives it away - "RAC won't tolerate abuse of its employees  blah blah..  may refuse to provide the contracted service etc.." Sure give away that they are crap and they know it.

Waited 6 hours for a 'mechanic'.  Luckily not a big issue for me as I could walk home and wasn't in a hurry.  Very nice youth, we got on well but he'd been on duty since noon and wouldn't finish till midnight. He didn't contribute anything that I didn't already know.  Didn't attempt any repair.  His scanner was crap - didn't even pick up the faults mine did.  They use 'Haynes' manuals - these are not the ones from my youth, they are all online now.  His 'Haynes' didn't know which fuse or relays were involved with the starter - info I already had from a simple internet search.

He decided to ignore all his own warnings about towing and towed me home 1/2 mile rather than call in a pick up truck. We went very slowly but I hope my trans is OK. He was so tired he forgot his expensive RAC tow bar and would have left it if I hadn't noticed it standing against a wall.

He recounted how RAC has changed and they take ages to get to customers, who are then understandably irate with him.

It seems they have been taken over by Private Equity and are the process of being asset (and reputation) stripped.

I only use these breakdown services for national recovery so I don't expect any actual assistance apart from that.  Normally I would just use  RescueMyCar or Start Rescue but went with RAC because it was cheaper this year.

Frankly I'd rather go with a simple 'no repairs, we'll just send a pick up truck' which couldn't have been slower.

Incidentally was in ATS a few days ago to get an exhaust on SWMBO's car and a couple came in with a nice new VW beetle - "Tire pressure monitor keeps flagging a low tire, we don't know which one it is and annoyingly it won't tell us",  "No problem sir we'll check them all for you."  ATS proceeded to put the car on ramp and check every tyre.  God knows what it cost.  How difficult is it to buy/use a tyre pressure gauge???  These are the sort of people who need what RAC purport to offer (and don't). Would they notice?

Omega General Help / Re: Question about cabin filter
« on: 27 January 2024, 18:43:47 »
My notes say that the Mann active carbon filters are a bit too thin.  Crosland ones are better as are Wix. I would avoid Crosland for oil filters but their cabin filters seemed ok.

Omega General Help / Re: GM Black Sealant 90485251
« on: 27 January 2024, 18:37:34 »
Starting to assemble cam covers for V6 soon, found my old Black Sealant 9048525. There is still enough for at least one cover but it is 10 years I last time used it. It is still liquid, so perhaps usable?? Is there any "Best Before" time after first time opened?
When silicone sealant (which I think this is) goes off then either it will have set hard or more likely (and less noticeable) it will have lost its ability to set.  So squeeze out a bit leave it a few hours open to air and moisture and see if it has set.

Car not person, national recovery:
Start Rescue wanted £46 renewal
RAC £38.25 (after £25 topcashback)
AA £48 after cashback
Also got cheap quotes for Emergency Assist (£27.39) and Rescue My Car (£24.85) but on checking their small print their 'national recovery' is a joke - its their decision whether to do it or give you a contribution to accomodation.  Rescue My Car wouldn't recover you to your home if your destination was nearer!  Those clauses are new and disappointing, Rescue My Car used to be a good breakdown company.

If you want personal cover rather than car cover it was £5 or so more.

Why don't people simply deactivate keyless entry. It can be done on some vehicles on the key fob alone, others by using the infotainment system and other vehicles can have it coded out.
Anyone old enough to remember the old Clifford system of fitting an inline switch or additional key switch on the ignition circuit will be familiar with how a Ghost system works. Obviously with Ghost you have a choice of what to press to authorise ignition.

Is it only keyless ignition cars that are vulnerable?  My 2009 CL500 isn't keyless but there is no metal into metal, the 'key' is a plastic plug that just pushes into a plastic socket.  It would fit into any CL500 socket (but wouldn't start the vehicle of course).

I was thinking of wiring in just the sort of simple hidden switch you mention.  It would only be a small chore to remember to flick it on each time, but wiring it in without upsetting something might be a big chore.

Some good black friday deals - just renewed mine and went with RAC this year.

General Car Chat / Re: Leather conditioner

Magic trees....    ....I used to have about 10m if the buggers, because everyone thought it was funny. I blame those DTM and that Hotel21 troublemakers!

Mind you, I hate leather seats with a passion. Who ever came up with that needs stringing up.

Sorry, I found all of those leather leathers and conditioning creams smelt of Domestos.

Yes I forgot to mention that Gliptone also smells of bleach to me.  Just tried a magic tree (AKA Little trees") leather flavour - it smells quite similar to the Gliptone to me.

The old smell of the car which I liked was completely different, more like freshly baked bread but I assumed was coming from the leather or previous leather treatment as no sign of air freshners.  It had been there nearly a year until I put the Gliptone on.

If you just want national recovery so you can sort out problems yourself  then try Start Rescue - about £40-£50 and covers the car whoever is driving.

Beware some companies that offer national recovery have clauses in the small print that say they either recover you OR pay a small contribution to a night in a hotel, at their discretion.  You can guess which they might choose.

Almost all companies won't recover you if the problem is caused by an accident. 'Start' do cover accidents.

I used to use Rescue My Car - also good but have a call out charge.

General Car Chat / Leather conditioner
« on: 12 November 2023, 11:11:11 »
I bought some Gliptone leather conditioner based one a few reviews including here that it has a wonderful leather smell.  I put it on my steering wheel.  However to me it smells very chemical, of mothballs even.  My car interior used to smell what I think of as leather - difficult to describe but a pleasant very slightly yeasty smell.  Does anyone know what conditioner has that smell?

The Gliptone does work very well it's just the smell I don't like.

Cars for Sale & wanted / Re: Manual 2.6 Elite for sale
« on: 12 August 2023, 11:48:10 »
After 7 price reductions and 7 months it looks like the dealer has finally sold my old mig - £1,495 or less. Sale maybe connected to the ULEZ scrappage scheme expansion.

If anyone seeing this has bought it contact me, I have a detailed spreadsheet and info for X949SPU.

I've had similar issues ,head scratchers with stuck open EGR valves and leaking injector (albeit on a vauxhall 4 banger ,NOT V6 )  :-\

Second the 'stuck open EGR valve' thought -  lower temp resulting in unburnt fuel/high emissions.  Most of all though this is a very easy thing to test - undo 2 bolts and just blank it off. My 2.5 V6 ran very happily for 1/4 of its life with a blanked off EGR.  If the EG is stuck open you would expect some rough idle when cold, not so obvious on a V6 perhaps.

« on: 13 July 2023, 02:06:50 »
I had the reverse problem - car I wanted was 40% overpriced: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1774931636178655 .  Seller wouldn't negotiate at all.  Consequently car has been 'for sale' for a year.  Seller has over 20 cars 'for sale'. What's that about?

At least their cars are all photographed in the same location, albeit a public place.

I think because Facebook ads are free a lot of weird people waste their time and ours on it.
