Omega General Help / Knock sensor issue but no paperclip code?
« on: 25 September 2007, 16:35:38 »
I am still trying to track down why my 2.5 V6 is gutless! It cruises at speed fine but give it a hill and it becomes a Ford Fiesta. This is a long term problem which i have learnt to live with and mostly isn't an issue. Three and a half years ago I had the auto selector switch changed and that improved things a bit but only in as much as the car changed up and down more readily.

Today I thought I bet it is one of the knock sensors - frayed wiring or such. However I have just done the paperclip test and no codes (other than the 12).

is it possible that one could be faulty but not show up on the paperclip test? Any other ideas?

Omega General Help / Auto gearbox gasket and filters question
« on: 21 August 2007, 16:25:55 »
I sent off for gaskets and filter for my auto 2.5 Omega and the package duly arrived from England today.

I opened the box and in it there is one filter and one gasket about a foot square. I can't get under the car to recheck as I have ricked my back this morning shifting rocks but my car definitely has two pans.

The part numbers are :

N209 25 02         Rear pan gasket
N209 27 01         Vaux Filter 44MM 4L30E

Can anyone confirm that I have the right/wrong items for my 2.5 V6?

Omega General Help / Quick Dexron 111 filler pipe question
« on: 17 August 2007, 15:32:15 »
I have the gaskets and filter on the way for my auto gearbox change.

I have found a source of 5 litres Dexron 111 at 42 euros and 1 litre bottles at 12 euros. The guy said I might be better off buying two 5 litres...... than 7 litres.

My question is do either of the bottles come with a filler tube - neither seemed to have one unless it is hidden under the cap?

Omega General Help / Lazy seatbelt retraction
« on: 14 August 2007, 11:59:40 »
My front seat belts have become very slow, sometimes needing help, to go back into the door pillar.

Is this something easily fixed by a squib of WD 40 or a bigger problem?

Is it MOT failure material in the UK?

Omega General Help / MID spurious displays?
« on: 10 August 2007, 14:50:30 »
yet another thing to go wrong with my tractor, although in fairness it has been doing this on and off over the last so many months.

I am driving along usually with the display showing how hot it is outside. then suddenly the display shows any of the following plus some others

Top up coolant (or similar)
Brake pads
oil level
Headlight tailight etc etc

They aren't actually correct cos I do check these things regularly and you can get rid of it by pressing the button on the stalk. I am living with it but am interested what the problem is and is it common? Faulty MID unit maybe? Are they expensive 2nd hand?

Omega General Help / Passenger Door - crack of doom !
« on: 01 August 2007, 17:04:07 »
Before I became an OOF, the drivers door had the crack of doom. I fixed that after a fashion after stripping the door down.

I recall somewhere on the forum advice on what to do if the strap hasn't yet parted company with the door. Despite regular greasing, the passenger front door is now reluctant to open past halfway.

Can anyone give me advice on what to do please or point me to the right place on the forum? Searching FAQ's and maintenance guides on dial up at 44k is not wonderful.

Omega General Help / BOSAL Exhaust centre boxes
« on: 27 July 2007, 17:10:19 »
Had two more Nexens fitted this morning to replace the trashed tyres.

Had tracking and camber done by quite flash looking kit (although the computer was only 64 as opposed to the Athlon 3000's etc of yesterday) Camber was acceptable so left that alone. The tracking was horribly out. £18.

While the car was up on the ramps, we had a good look at the blowing exhaust. Both the back edges of the centre boxes have holes where I have caught many things (rocks, sleeping policeman, tops of car park ramps and so on). He quoted WAIT FOR IT

£238 pounds for the two boxes and then £16 an hour to fit them. They were from the BOSAL catalogue. Is that a reasonable price!? I suspect it will be cheaper to go to an Opel dealer and get some as recommended on the forum. But that will mean an 80 mile round trip to get them to order the parts, another trip to check they have actaully got them in, a three night hotel stay when I go back and find they broke the rear box getting the pipes off and need another three days to order a back box.........

BuyPartsBy are about £80 plus VAT but carriage to Spain!!

The shop manager said to me as a parting shot - take it to a crash repair and paint shop and they will be able to braze a plate on for much less! I may just do that.

Woe.

Just checked over the Omega before sending it off to the airport. The front tyres are trashed on the INNER edges particularly the near side wheel( down to wire!) . Always happens on good tyres never on the bald ones.

I changed the wheel for the spare and sent it off. Before doing so, checked for obvious play. Two possibilities.

1. The wheel bearing seemed possibly at fault as there is discernible movement on it at both 6 and 12 or 9o'clock and 3.... Looked in Haynes and changing a wheel bearing will be beyond me without a huge torque wrench and possibly a hub puller. Are they expensive to get done at a garage? What should I expect?

2. With the wheel off, shaking the disc 9 and 3 o'clock, I could see the steering assembly underneath the car "moving upwards" i.e. if it was a rack the whole lot looks as though it is moving horizontally upwards a few mm's. Is that normal?

When it comes back later today, I will have a closer look. Any suggestions as to what to look for? :'(

Omega General Help / Rear shock absorber sleeve.
« on: 07 July 2007, 11:26:50 »
Had a pair of new rear tyres yesterday. While it was up in the air I had a good look around. Discs, pads fine but on the nearside the sleeve on the shock absorber looks as though it has torn all the way around, detached itself from the outer top part of shocker and has rolled down over the lower part of the shocker. On the other side it looks right.i.e fastened to the inner and outer part.

Obviously it is there to keep dust out which we have an awful lot of here. Is it an MOT failure? Can it be repaired or is it a new shocker? The rears were only done three years ago.

Omega General Help / Omega V6 speed rating on tyres- V or W
« on: 05 July 2007, 20:09:16 »
Guys,

I have lost my handbook so what are the permissable speed ratings for my Omega? Am I right in thinking V or W are fine?

Am going tomorrow to get some new but the guy said he only had them in V rating. I have always fitted W as they cost very little more than V. Current tyres on my V6 Elite are 225 16 55 W.

Omega General Help / V6 coolant change
« on: 05 July 2007, 20:19:20 »
I am thinking of doing my coolant change now rather than in the Autumn.

How much antifreeze coolant do I need and which colour? I have no idea what colour is in it at the moment - it is over three years since it was last changed.

I remember there being a thread on this a while back but couldn't find it! Is there a VX/Opel part number I should ask for?

Omega General Help / Omega wing mirror glass -differences
« on: 12 June 2007, 13:20:54 »
I have a passenger side cracked mirror glass on my RHD 97 Omega Elite.

What are the differences on models?  e.g.  Old, mini facelift are they the same? Presumably post facelift are a different shape. Am I right in thinking I need one from any Omega pre 1998?

Mine are heated but to be quite honest I haven't used the facility in 3 years so would there be a problem in fitting a none heated glass if I cannot find a heated one?

Omega General Help / always had poor performance from my Omega?
« on: 09 June 2007, 14:24:54 »
This might seem a stange question but is it possible that my car has always had poor performance over the last nearly 8 years?!

We had a string of 2 litre Carltons before buying this auto petrol 2.5 Omega. It had 48k on the clock when we bought it and now has over 140k.  It goes OK but not startlingly so. We just thought it was a bigger car so what do you expect.

Things came to a head when we needed to tow a caravan and on a test nearly didn't make it up a local 1 in 5 hill. It boiled as well. The local VX diagnosed "new radiator" which fixed the overheating. The kickdown reluctance was diagnosed as new auto box selector switch. For a while things were Ok and we did about 7000 towing miles with no problems. Nowadays I drive sedately but always feel the car should have more go.

Now is it possible that each time the cam belt has been changed that it is a tooth out? Is there something else which might cause the car to generally be down on power compared to another V6? ( Sadly I have never driven another to compare but as a passenger in an auto diesel Omega I was impressed by its acceleration!)

Omega General Help / Aux belt V6 - adjustment and questions
« on: 06 June 2007, 09:31:43 »
Well at long last I am trying to get to the bottom of the whining/squealing noise on start up. It has been getting progessively worse to the point where I start the car up and leave it ticking over till the noise goes when the engine is warm

This morning I "slipped" the aux belt off. Started it up and no noise. So the problem is belt or pulley related. My guess but it is only a guess, is the belt slips when the engine is cold/at low revs and under load e.g. when you put the air con on.  The belt by the way looks like the original. It certainly hasn't been changed in the last 7 half years. It is perished, cracked as you would expect so I will get a new one.

All the aux pulleys seem to spin freely and without bearing problem rumbles.

Q1 when I go to the Opel dealer 40 miles away are there loads of different belts for a 97 V6 or will they be able to easily decide from chassis numbers etc which one? ( I had intended to take it off and measure it but the secondary air pipes and so on are in the way - that can wait till I have a new belt!)

Q2 The aux belt tension adjuster. It looks as though the adjuster is midway between the lugs. Is it something I can adjust? Looking from above is it better for the lug to be higher or lower.

Q3 Striking a balance between changing everything and just what is necessary should I buy a belt and tensioner, a belt only or belt and tensioner pulley if the latter can be seperated?

Q4 Any harm in squirting the tensioner pulley bearing area with a small amount of WD40?

Omega General Help / Loose change glovebox problem
« on: 17 May 2007, 14:13:23 »
The latest thing to "drop off" our tractor, sorry multi purpose Omega is the spare change /storage area compartment thingy to the right of the steering wheel. It shuts OK and then opens itself as you drive along. I can't see what has changed! The opening shutting mechanism seems fine and the engaging teeth seem fine.

Anyone else have this problem? I may just wire it permanently shut!
