« on: 26 August 2015, 19:52:49 »
18th September and the World Cup kicks off.I refer of course to the Rugby Union World Cup and not that woosy footballist rubbish.Would love to see England come good again but I doubt it,so will settle for some good hard fought matches. :y

General Discussion Area / On the rise?
« on: 24 August 2015, 19:49:44 »
On my travels I still see a number of drivers[mainly van drivers it must be said]driving along with their mobile phones pinned to their ears, however what does appear to me to be on the rise is the number of car drivers[among them driving instructors :o]I see driving about looking down as they've got their mobiles in their lap and are busy sending/receiving text messages >:(

in thinking cam belt change on a V6 is something of a time consuming and therefore costly operation to have carried out?

General Discussion Area / Seems convenient
« on: 18 August 2015, 18:03:54 »
It has been said today that Chinese minister for safety is under investigation on charges of corruption. There's convenient for you! They didn't confirm[or deny]that this investigation has anything to do with the explosions at Tianjin.

General Discussion Area / VJ day
« on: 15 August 2015, 14:40:14 »
Today is VJ day.The Japanese-who never signed up to the Geneva Convention-treated prisoners of war abominably, and in all probability the populace of the places they occupied too,but how many more times do people expect them to apologise?Even now they are only allowed the JDF,and not a full on military establishment. On the other hand I have heard reports of people vilifying the U.S.for using the A bombs.I don't have numbers to hand of casualties from these two raids, but if they'd not been used how much longer would the war have continued and with how many more casualties?Let's face it if Hitler or the Japanese beaten the allies to the nuclear bomb would they have hesitated to use it?I think not!!!

General Discussion Area / Explosion
« on: 13 August 2015, 19:59:56 »
Saw on the BBC news at 4a.m. this morning of a massive explosion in China.Reports were sketchy at that time but they said at least 17 dead and 30 odd firefighters were missing.More firefighters were on their way to the scene, but emergency services were hanging back a little as they weren't sure what kind of explosives/chemicals etc.they were facing.

General Discussion Area / Should be stunning
« on: 11 August 2015, 19:29:24 »
The restoration of Donald Campbells K7 Bluebird boat is still ongoing, hopefully to be completed in the not too distant future. Not only will it then reside in the museum at Coniston Water, but apparently they already have permission to run it on Coniston at speeds up to 100m.p.h.Now that should be a stunning sight to see!

General Discussion Area / Fact or fiction?
« on: 06 August 2015, 18:24:36 »
I have recently taken to reading the Aubrey/Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian. For those who prefer films to books think Master and Commander and Far Side of the World-the first and tenth books in the series respectively. In some of the books he refers to an area of London called the Duchy of Savoy. This he writes is an area of sanctuary for those sought by bailiffs and law officers for debt etc,and while within the boundaries a debtor cannot be "Laid by the heels" or "taken up" in any way.Does anyone know if this area actually existed? Is it indeed fact or fiction?

General Discussion Area / Took a while
« on: 01 August 2015, 20:23:26 »
Did shopping earlier and on Display in supermarket car park were an Adam a Corsa and one of the new Vivas.Viva was all stickered up with starting price and list of standard equipement. One of these items was "cornering lights"which confused me no end as I couldn't figure out what they were supposed to be.Took a while before penny dropped and I realised[at least I hope I'm right]that they meant those little fog lamp things in front bumper that swivel with the steering! Doh :-[

General Discussion Area / Insurance renewal
« on: 31 July 2015, 19:59:17 »
Had my insurance renewal through today.Okay I do it the expensive way by monthly direct debit rather than a one off payment, but I was quite happy to find that this years payments would be just shy of £3.50p a month less than last year.I class that as a bit of a result albeit a small one,but every little helps. :y

General Discussion Area / Dump valve question
« on: 31 July 2015, 19:55:02 »
Talking at work and setting the world to rights on a variety of topics-as you do-and talk turned to cars, particularly turbo'd ones with dump valves.now as I understand it[I've never owned a turbo]you accelerate turbo spools up from exhaust gases you ease off slightly to change gear, dump valve sneezes you get back onto throttle and off you go again. If this is the case-and this is the question I posed that no-one there knew the answer to-would it still sneeze on a car with an auto box? After all auto's tend to slur their way up/down the box rather than coming off/getting back on throttle.just curious really.

General Discussion Area / New addition
« on: 26 July 2015, 19:40:38 »
Born at 12.34pm a baby girl weighed in at  6lb 2oz and they're going to call her Teyana.technically as Maureen and I never married-we simply lived together for 20 odd years-I am not related, but Teyanas mother is Maureens granddaughter who grew up calling me granddad and so does the first great granddaughter,so I feel justified in claiming them as relatives. Both mother and newborn doing very well :y.Still say though that all newborns look like baby gorillas being all wrinkly and "scrunched"up ;D

General Discussion Area / Bent vicar
« on: 24 July 2015, 20:10:22 »
The ex vicar of Darton[near Barnsley] is on the run and believed to be on mainland Europe somewhere after failing to appear in court for sentencing after being found guilty of nicking about £24,000!Apparently from 2007 he was keeping back money paid for weddings, funerals and cemetery memorials.Bet he could preach a decent sermon though!

General Car Chat / Modded Corsa
« on: 21 July 2015, 20:41:30 »
Got passed by one of these[a 59 plate]on my way home tonight. It was lowered of course and had the biggest wheels I remember seeing on a Corsa, but what really caught my attention was the rear wheels. The last time I saw rear wheels so splayed out it was on a Triumph 2.5 I had which needed a serious rear suspension repair.I don't know whether the Corsa owner had splayed them so much so the tops of the wheels/tyres would fit inside the arches or what, but it must play havoc with tyre life :o
