General Discussion Area / The Daewoo has gone
« on: 24 November 2014, 21:09:24 »
Yes folks, after many years of faithful service our Daewoo grille/microwave/oven has finally cooked its last! The search is now on for its replacement. The cheapest I've found so far is at £79.99p from Argos and is a Morphy Richards model.Anyone any thoughts/experiences/recommendations?

General Car Chat / Focus
« on: 13 November 2014, 20:59:10 »
Yet another mild restyle has been done on Fords Focus,I believe the Mondeo is receiving the same sort of restyle too.Whether this will help sales of the Mondeo round here or not will remain to be seen. The Insignia far and away outsells the Mondeo in this neck of the woods.Ford customers appear to prefer going the Focus route rather than  buying the Mondeo.

General Discussion Area / Why 2?
« on: 13 November 2014, 20:44:23 »
I know the Insignia is not universally liked on here, although I must admit that although I'm unlikely ever to own one I actually quite like them, but why does it have two speedometers? There's the "ordinary" dial with a needle one and between that and the rev counter a small digital one, why?Must say though the digital one reminds me of those LCD watches that were popular way back in the seventies!

General Discussion Area / The Audi way?
« on: 12 November 2014, 16:56:10 »
Out and about today and on three occasions I was following Audis of differing variants who decided to stand on their brakes make a left turn and then indicate that they were doing so!It's well known that BMW indicators don't work,so is this Audis take on the theme?

General Discussion Area / Off their beat?
« on: 12 November 2014, 16:52:01 »
Went to local Tesco-other supermarkets are available-today and there in the car park was a police BMW estate,on the crests on the doors and bonnet and also in large littering forward of the bonnet crest were the words Merseyside Police.Has summat gone wrong with their satnav or are police beat areas getting rather larger?!!!

General Discussion Area / Just my luck
« on: 08 November 2014, 14:45:21 »
So the other day drivers door mirror gets hit, body colour casing nowhere to be found black plastic bit that frames mirror as you look at it from drivers seat broken. This afternoon got chance to get to local breakers who've always been very good on price "Got any Omegas in?"says I."Yes there's two down the yard on the right"replies he.Great off I go only to find that one is a N reg-in CD spec-and other is a S reg Elite!Although both are largely intact-including door mirrors, neither are any good for my W reg!! Oh bother!!!! there goes that idea then!

General Car Chat / Bit of a rarity?
« on: 06 November 2014, 20:20:19 »
Saw a 53 plate Mondeo Ghia today,o.k.so nothing rare there then. What made it a little out of the ordinary was the fact it was a 4door saloon and not the far more common-round here at least-hatchback version. But what made it a bit rarer still for me at any rate was that it was white.I've only ever seen two other white ones in this MK3? version, both of those were ST's one a hatch t'other an estate and they were on adealers forecourt with less than 10miles on the clocks and were part of a cancelled police order, and that was a good few years ago now.

General Discussion Area / I'd've cried
« on: 05 November 2014, 20:26:13 »
A customer turned up at local Citroen dealership to trade in his "old"car for his brand new Citroen Berlingo Multispace today. It was one of those awful automatic ones where the car slows down between up changes.Anyway apart from his new car he got a fair-but not huge-wedge of money for his old car. What did he trade in?A 14 plate Jaguar XF Sportbrake!!! I'd've cried!

General Discussion Area / Getting fed up now!
« on: 05 November 2014, 19:55:36 »
Ours is quite a narrow street with parking on one side and double yellow lines on the other. This leaves enough room for just one vehicle to pass the parked cars-we have no off street parking-however the street is used as a "rat run".Since we moved here just over a year ago the drivers door mirror has been tapped-but not heavily- once by the arm of a motorcycle rider and once by the arm of a moped rider[I saw both incidents].It has been hit hard enough-presumably by a car/van-to knock it out of place on three other occasions, and a further once hard enough to knock off the body colour mirror casing. This morning when I went out I found it had been hit once again, this time hard enough to break the black plastic bit that frames the mirror and of the coloured mirror casing there was absolutely no sign.Luckily the mirror glass has so far managed to survive intact.I'm now getting fed up of inconsiderate drivers not allowing enough space to avoid hitting the mirror just so they can shave milliseconds off there journey time!Just got to wait now for the happy coincidence of having the cash to spare to get another casing and the time to go get one along with dropping on one in a local scrappy-then I suppose I'll have to paint the thing too!

General Car Chat / Springs
« on: 15 October 2014, 21:12:04 »
When it comes to springs-other than knowing the different types i.e.coil,leaf etc.-I know diddley squat. So when the Omega failed its M.o.T. on a broken rear spring I phoned a few places for prices the best of which turned out to be £28.22p each so I bought a pair. These turned out to be K-Flex springs by a company called KYB.I don't know whether these are considered to be good/poor or indifferent springs but they fit seem to do the job and more importantly got the car through the M.o.T.

General Discussion Area / A bit gruesome
« on: 09 October 2014, 22:27:21 »
A bloke I know showed me some film footage on his fancy phone.Apparently the Israeli security forces shot and killed a suicide bomber before he could set off the bomb, his body was then hoisted to shoulder height by about half a dozen people who then proceeded off down the street accompanied by a large crowd all protesting about the killing.Thing is no one removed or diffused the bomb which promptly detonated.Whoever was filming this kept on doing so and when the smoke and dust settled they were walking among dead bodies and scattered limbs all over the place.Like I said bit gruesome, but there was no more protest!

General Car Chat / Failed
« on: 04 October 2014, 14:53:24 »
Although never confident of a M.O.T pass I was slightly disappointed when the Omega failed it today.3 advisories-two for slightly corroded brake pipes, third slight play in steering idler arm bush.Failed on only one point namely a broken rear spring. So questions are:
1]replacement,a doddle or a PITA?
2]Is £28 apiece a good/bad/reasonable price?
3]I presume that as with dampers, brakes and the like replacement should be done in pairs?
I don't suppose that given that's the only failure point and the advisories are nothing overly major that it's really done so bad for a 14yr old.
