General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?

Also topped up screen wash, first time using 3.2 as a commuter in winter. It's thirsty on washer fluid!

The swede uses nearly a gallon a week at this time of year  :-X

I had the same at HSBC, had to go in to prove my income for a current account (the £250 incentive seemed worth filling in a form for). Went in dressed in DIY attire, some sniffy little man in a suit was very snooty with me until he looked at my payslip.

“Is this your payslip?”
“It’s got my name on it hasn’t it?”
“And this is the amount for one month?”
“No, it’s the amount I get every month”
*cue broad beaming smile*

General Discussion Area / Re: NHS Crisis
« on: 05 January 2018, 10:23:30 »

This is precisely why one of Donalds first, and most important so far, jobs was to undo Obamacare... socialist schemes cost EVERYONE dearly... in this case, personal health insurance premiums practically doubled overnight :o

That is just plain wrong. Data shows that the USA's incredibly efficient capitalist system, has spent more per capita than our socialist system, every year since about 1960.

A big issue facing the NHS at the moment is the cuts made to social care. Since 2009/10 total spending has fallen 13.5% (more in real terms) while the number of people over 65 grew 18% and those over 85 grew 17%. Consequently you have elderly people who aren't getting the care that they need (or, haven't saved enough to look after themselves in old age, if you turn it on its head).

So these people get ill and end up in the only place that an ambulance will take them. Then, once the hospital has sorted them out, they often can't be discharged as there is nowhere for them to go where they will get the level of care that they need. As the hospital owes them a duty of care, they can't just kick them to the curb.

I experienced this first hand last year when my dad went into hospital. He was on a ward of 8, 3 of whom had nothing medically wrong with them, but there was no-one in place to take care of them (one needed to be in a home, two needed health visitors) so they just stayed on the ward for the entire two weeks my dad was in, and were still there after he came out. ::)

So now it's almost impossible to see a Doctor outside office hours and it's damn hard to see one within the Monday - Friday 9 to 5 window for that matter as well!  >:(  Try phoning your local surgery to make a non urgent appointment for next Tuesday afternoon for example, and you'll get told to phone before 8am on the day.  When you do that you invariably get told there are no appointments available, but if it's not urgent they might be able fit you in next year!  ::)

I very much like our local GP's system, you call up in a morning, they assess you over the phone, either give you an appointment of tell you to buzz off to the pharmacy. Funnily enough, when I had a rash, fever and had just got off a plane from china, I didn't have to wait "we can see you in 30mins, but if you start to feel worse come immediately".

Under the system most GP's operate, I'd have been another one in A&E (as it turned out I had cellulitis and needed treatment reasonably urgently) who could have avoided being there.

General Car Chat / Re: Windscreen wiper theft......
« on: 04 January 2018, 12:35:06 »
As Lizzie comments, it is quite unusual (and sad) to steal one wiper.

Someone once pinched the glass out of my drivers side wing mirror (on a mk3 mondeo no less!). Never had a wiper go though.  ???

What did they want any of that for? I’ve never been asked to produce any of that sort of documentation for insurance  ???

Speaking to someone I know at JLR this morning, apparently JLR are already taking an interest in case there is any blame coming their way, ie recall that needs to be carried out or other. Obviously, they will keep it quiet for obvious reasons for the time being.

Listening to the radio this morning (so potentially unreliable) the car was described as an old Mandy, possibly 1980’s if so JLR will be able to wash their hands of the whole affair (and rightly so).

But, it got me thinking, is there a limit on 3rd party liability on car insurance policies, I’ve never bothered to check mine, but I’m guessing if their is one, it’s likely to be a round number, so £1m, £5m or £10m, in any of those events, the policyholder could be in the sticky stuff.

Oh, and if there isn’t a cap, I’ll bet my bottom dollar there will be one on future policies.

Given the nature of the event, I’ll bet there’s a few sweaty palms at the NFU mutual this morning!

General Car Chat / Re: 2017 Reliability - Small Cars & by brand
« on: 02 January 2018, 12:43:45 »
The major car manufacturers have been making vehicles for long enough now to get it right, surely, and engineer a worthy product? No excuse for unreliability with modern materials and techniques.

Ron.

You'd hope, but its doubtful imho. Taking one specific example, both the x-type and XJ X350 had a problem with water ingress into the boot, via the rear light clusters if I remember correctly. Spin forward to 2014 and my then boss was deprived of his facelifted XF for a week and (other than for his warranty) would have had a nearly £1500 bill for.... water ingress into the boot via the rear light clusters ::).

Jeeze, I knew you were likely to get robbed in Manchester, but they don’t usually advertise!

Baby pigeons will go hungry because daddy isn't coming home.

But if you take a spatula to your wing mirror, you and the good lady Opti will not ;)

Considering the Pro ones as the budget won't quite stretch to the industrial ones, even at half price...

Anything will be better than the busted plastic teacrates I currently use ::)

Halfords normally have a boxing day additional discount, I seem to recall paying 255 for the industrial top box and trolley

Today’s email offer is £349 for the industrial 6 drawer top and base cabinet combined. Equivalent pro set is £199  :y

Indeed, we all, and I am no exception treat the work we do on cars as mundane. And that breeds contempt. We would all do well to consider the risks and what is at stake when we work on our motors.

I think it’s important to remember people do not look now, as they did then. I mean, looking at the contemporary photo below, she’s hardly a beacon of physical perfection, but you could argue he’s “batting his average”.

Agree with the above. Sack him on grounds of stupidity. I’m also not mad keen on the idea of him using public funds (salary, prime London office space, heat, light etc etc) to w@nk himself silly.

The touching of the knee is all post-Weinstein(spelling?) hysteria. And I speak as one of the Snoflake Millenials ;)
