The Senator has some mouldy bits, its been stood still for a long time. The passenger side seat belt has loads of white spots on it and stinks!!!

Car has a general mouldy smell, due to the fact its been stood still.

Any suggestions? - Was going to buy a bottle of Febreeze and see what that does.

General Discussion Area / Senator Fuel Consumption Acuarcy
« on: 13 January 2007, 19:18:57 »
The trip comp in the dash read 31 after the run from Swindon to Ardley, i reset it as i was leaving Swindon. Its dropped to 27mpg now, however the main gallon reading on the dash has gone from 4 done to -- blinking, so i have used 4 gallons of fuel...

And its 51 miles to Swindon from me!! I'd say i have done around 60/65 miles it in though, going via other places. At max say 70 miles.

I was giving it stick all the way, but that average reading does not seam right.

4 gallons for 65 miles of driving!? thats not 30 ish mpg!

General Discussion Area / Senator Fuel Gauge
« on: 14 January 2007, 14:44:38 »
Went down BP Garage today, stuck 15 quids worth of go go juice in the senny.

Started it up, gauge read 6 gallons!  :o :-?

Now my maths is very bad but:

£15 @ 89.9 gives me = 16.85 litres of fuel

1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 litres

16.85 Divided by 4.54 = 3.7 Gallons of fuel.

Yet the gauge read 6.

Any suggestions? Dirty sensor in the tank i am thinking?

General Discussion Area / Public Thanks to Omegatoy
« on: 13 January 2007, 18:38:31 »
Just like to say a BIG 'Thanks' to Omegatoy  :y

Firstly he told me about this Senator, and he was spot on.

Popped around on the way back from Swindon, he had a good look over it, topped up the auto box fluid in seconds, told me how to properly change the fluid and check its level. Gave me a new water pump and replaced my coolant bottle!

So again, BIG, BIG thanks Graham  :y

General Discussion Area / Driving without tax?
« on: 11 January 2007, 14:52:01 »
My understanding is, you cannot drive a car without tax?

However the problem:

Picking up a car on Saturday, it has a new MOT but no tax.

Its already Thursday, I won't be able to get a insurance certificate by Saturday.

I know you need a MOT + insurance to get tax, problem is i won't have any in time to drive the car. Even if i get one of those 1 day insurance things, cause they won't let you buy tax iic.

Any ideas?

Can i drive the car saying insurance is on the way so i can buy tax?  :-/

Has anyone has experiance with on-line tax?

Thanks in advance!  :y

General Discussion Area / Senator Reliability Vs Early Omegas
« on: 07 January 2007, 23:45:41 »
As above really, got the chance of getting a Senator now.

Senator would be a '92 K 3.0 24v

Omega would be around the 1997-8 time, due to the limit of my budget.

Dave & Mark seam to run one fairly problem free around Europe, although i did hear something about the steam in the alps and hack saw the aircon bits off or something?  :-?

The Senators are getting on now, and for my 6k mile trip in the heat of summer would a Senator be any less reliable?

Plus points for the Senator:

 * Cheaper Insurance (classic)
 * One thats going, only bubbles on rear arch & heater matrix already replaced.
 * Cheaper to buy
 * Cheaper to fix up ?? - No cambelt
 * Its a straight 6
 * Its a senny!

Plus points for the Omega:

 * Its newer
 * I know them very well now
 * Maybe more toys (HID's) ect if i get mini facelift

BUT would an Omega be more reliable? - Everything i hear about Sennys is the electrics are iffy but mechanically sound (apart from arches, heater matrix, air-con  ::))  :-/

General Discussion Area / Senators

Pete Elite is coming to pick up the steering column on Monday, he has a Senator without a use which has got me thinking.

Most of you know I am going around Europe in the summer, its been pointed out which ever car i get I should run it for a while to make sure its reliable. After all i want it breaking down in the UK on the M40 rather than in the Swiss Alps!

Pete's senny is the 24v one (only version i'd have) - Its been stood still for 3 years!  :o

However mentioned in another thread they are easier to work on than the Omega, so i should be laughing!!

Only real problem is the rear arches, what would I be looking at to get those sorted?

Whats interesting is i did an insurance quote in my name on a 1991 3.0 24V Senny Auto, came out at £340 fully comp!  :o Which aint bad.

Any thoughts suggestions on a Senny thats not moved in 3 years?

General Discussion Area / Got my car running again!
« on: 04 January 2007, 18:43:19 »
Put everything back together, might re-vist the throttle body as was to scared to push it open very far.

Put the breathers back on, throttle body, cam sensor, and all the other bits.

TheBoy popped around again to help me get the Aux belt in, many thanks for that!  :y

Nervous about starting it, but seamed to fire up ok  ;D

Took it for a slow run out on the country roads all seamed normal, once warm gave it some stick... and err wow quite a difference. It seams to want to rev so much more easily and goes though the range a lot faster. It feels a little more "free" and seams to rev easier  ::)

Very hard to describe but a noticeable difference in power  :) - Maybe cause i removed 2 blockages in the thin pipes, and a lump of crud that was in that extra tiny pipe near the throttle body?? - Defo going to re-vist that seamed to help a lot.

Cam cover and belt all seamed good, with it all clipped in there was no movement in the middle were the missing nut was... after the engine was warm, everything seams ok.

I don't want to leave that nut as is, when i get the chance (expert tools & help) i'll fix it.

Many, Many thanks to all who replyed in my earlier threads much appreciated  :y

Anyone thinking of going this year?

I am going on my Euro road trip with a mate from July to September, very tempted to do S2N 2007 as well....

Not sure if i will have enough time to prep a car by myself (my euro car will be in better nick than the S2N banger  ;)

Does anyone want to team up and take a Senny or something? - Really quite fancy doing a run like this.

A HUGE, HUGE thanks to TheBoy  :y

After i sheared that bolt off, I was practically in tears. So gave him a call "help" !!

He managed to swing by his house get a tool for my dropped torx screw, retrieve that and give advice on my problem. Feel a total t!t for undoing that nut... to eager to use the meaty new set.

Even though TB had guests around this evening, he still found the time to come around and help me  :y

Big Thanks Jaime  :y -  If you want to risk the pubs around here, pints on me  :y

General Discussion Area / Good days shopping
« on: 02 January 2007, 15:34:52 »
Borrowed TB's TC card today and done a bit of shopping!

4 x 5L Red Coolant
2 x 5L Oil - (They had an offer of buy 4 get 1 free, bit it was on the 20L bottles!)
2 x 500ml Brake Fluid
Brake Sensors
Breather Piper for a 2.2 (cheaper than carb cleaner)

And the smallest item was the most expensive, the cam sensor.

Also went over to Halfords, bought myself one those 150 piece socket sets for £99, got some heavy duty work overalls too and an adaptor so my breaker bar will work with the new set.

All in all a good day, although Vauxhall of Milton Keynes turned their nose up at TB's TC card  :o - He said these cards only have certian zones or something, bull i thought cause TB buys all his stuff here  >:( - Anywho he gave me trade anyway but charged to some random business  :-/

Also found my car prefers country driving!!, did blast to Milton Keynes reset the MPG when i left home, 25 miles each way of country driving, gave it some stick to, 70 most of the way 2 overtaking from 45 to 80... 6k rpm the lot... town driving though Buckingham & Milton Keynes also back in Brackley via the Bank. Got home averaged 31.4  :o :o

« on: 26 December 2006, 15:23:43 »
Still got 5 months to go before i finish Uni, BUT i can't stop thinking about getting a megga for my Euro trip.

Maybe getting OmegaToys TD estate, but also very tempted by an ex plod V6....

I went to a BCA auction a few months ago, first time was very interesting. Never been to a police one, there seams to be one in London Enfield which i might go to in the New Year.

Has anyone been to a police auction recently? any ideas how much the Estates go for? Thinking about megga estates, possible volvo T5's...
