As OOF celebrated its 15th birthday this week, it got me reminiscing of some of the OOF related events I've witness, either online or face to face.  Most have cracked me up, some have been sad, and some have hit emotions that a true man should never have.

I was going to do a post with some of of the things I recall, but currently time is against me.  I'll try to do something in the next week or so, but I couldn't like OOF's milestone of 15yrs go without posting something.

Do any of you have memories you'd like to share?

To provide secure HTTPS encryption, OOF uses Lets Encrypt certificates.

Let’s Encrypt’s older root cert is due to expire in September.

For most of us, nothing changes, and we won’t notice. But those attached to their old shitty devices or outdated browsers will likely get certificate errors and website insecure warnings

So, after dumping all its coolant in one big heap at motorway speeds, a colleague (who in a former life was a race engine tuner) and I had a quick look, and quickly determined it was the stat housing had failed.  Nothing repairable at side of road, as its a unique, plastic, moulded part.  Good job I have RAC recovery.

So call RAC, to be greeted with a message that I can't really call them, and report it online instead if possible, because of covid, and only hang on as a last resort.  I mean, we've had the sniffle virus for over a year, companies can't keep hiding behind that excuse.

Gave up holding after about 10mins, and did it online, at 2:30pm.  Technician called me at 4pm, telling me he was 30mins away, though I explained to him what I'd found, and that it was gonna need recovery, and it was RWD, but understandably he had to check first.  He rocked up at 4:30pm, and immediately decided it needed recovery, which he couldn't do, because it was RWD.  So I had to wait for a recovery truck.

Recovery truck turned upat 7pm, and was quickly on our way.  I had to stay in the car, due to covid, an experience that was quite unpleasant.


By 8pm, he'd dropped me at Beaconsfield services.

By 11pm, the next truck turned up.


Which meant I was home just before midnight.



This afternoon, after work, I pulled off the throttle body, to reveal fully the extent of the problem.  Its actually not the thermostat housing, just a plastic component to send the coolant in various directions.  The stat is not actually on the engine, and is mounted remotely.





Now time to order bits.  Need to decide genuine or pattern.  Genuine is about 2.5 - 3 times more expensive, but its not an expensive part, so will probably be based on availability.

Ideally, what I need is one of those plastic crates used a lot in warehousing etc.  But as I can't find one of a suitable size, looks like I need to make something.

Will probably use a wooden frame with hardboard sides, to try to keep the weight down, unless anybody has better ideas?


Now, because what it carries is liable to be very dirty and very wet, and it will get chucked on the back seat of the car or in the boot, I wanted to seal it, so was looking for a paint that wouldn't rub off too easily, and would hold make it completely waterproof and now able to leak.


Unless somebody knows where I can get a fairly sturdy plastic crate with internal dimensions of 620mm x 480mm and 220-250mm high ?  The dimensions can be slightly bigger, obviously, but would like to keep the size sensible.

He recommended (and supplied and posted) some allen keys for me a while back, as I was having some dreadful trouble removing some allen screws from some brand new RC cars.

Well, today, I was stripping one of mine so I can get the chassis in a vice after it lost* a fight with a kerb a week or 2 ago.  Even after applying a shead load of heat, it was being stubborn.  So I broke out the Wera ones, and really leant on it to undo them, which they did perfectly.


Thanks for the recommendation (and the running around to pick them up and get them to me, which was above and beyond).  Brilliant bits of kit.



*well, maybe a draw, as the kerb sustained a fair whack of damage

Whilst I deplore the comments of the subject of the thread, his colour should have no bearing on it.  Would it be any different if a white geezer said it? I hope not.


Whilst nobody minds a bit of banter, I think the title overstepped the line.  If you want to be outwardly racist, sexist, whatever-ist beyond light banter, then please free free to opps off elsewhere.  OOF does not welcome this 



And before everyone PMs me with leftie liberal woke abuse, remember my political views mean I am all for the mass cull, but wouldnt do it along race/religion/sex/age lines...   ...Hitler tried that, its proven not to work.  Thats hardly liberal.
