Sounds a bit off the wall and also teeing myself up for abuse but - anyone any experience of working as a film extra? 

Got a couple of paying leads to appear in films but dunno the ins/outs/payment/etc.

I've done some but for TV only, for History and Discovery channels. I was in Churchills Toy Box, a documentmenty and some TV docs on serial killers in the USA, played some backing characters, police, murder victims ect.

I was not paid, but I got the days off work as 'Training' so work paid me, none of the extras were paid either. Apparent from main character who plays serial killer.

It was more the experiance of being on a TV set, having make up done, costume ect. Really good fun. Did supply unlimited free food and drink.

It's also amazing how they can turn abandoned office blocks into USA crime seasons 


Not done film.... Yet. So maybe paid for film

My mate does it from time to time, and played Oswald Moseley in 'Upstairs Downstairs'.  He was also in 'Wolf Hall' the recent BBC drama about Thomas Cromwell.

Never done Films, done some TV, Radio and on the News (not in that way) including BBC 1 and ITV, mainly because some friends where in the game plus I used to do a fair bit of Engineering Coms work on Outside Broadcasts and Contracted Shows.

I appeared on a few live show with Uri Geller once or twice on Grampian and STV, that was a scream, the guy was a joke, also appeared on National Motor Show at the NEC, mainly because you rub shoulders with the right (or wrong) people and there Researchers can't be arsed to go out and find real people, so you end up doing a stand in, pretending your someone your not.

Ive had some close friends nearly crashed there car, listing to some of the garbage I had to come out with on BBC Radio.

As Tunnie says most of it is unpaid, but claimed expenses can be good, together with free Hotels and Bars for a few nights.

Are you a member of Equity?, fairly sure any talking roles require that, otherwise you just end up doing roles as a 'Mumble'er' in the background.

hi broocie, I was extra in that one of drama that starred james nesbitt when they filmed at thornton dog track think it was called quite ugly one morning I was paid for 2 days short filming that was £40 each day but that was about 10 years ago. was good fun and to see myself on telly stood right behind james in the clips,anyway go for it

I  use an agency and it depends on your availability and the roles that are needed.
You get submitted via the agency (and having  more than 1 usually helps) - depends who they know and how soon you can get there.
TV, adverts and some large crowd scenes in films are quite common.
Equity is not the force it was. If you have membership you can get better rates with some agencies. being asked to say stuff is not common, but not rare. Again depends on what you're doing and in what circumstances.

How you get paid depends on what you do and how often you work.
My stills shoot (for the agency) fee was deducted from payments until the debt was paid.

Your availability will determine how much you're used/work you get

It can be great fun, but there's lots of hanging around and going over and over stuff too.

Wasn't reliable enough for me and I've stopped calling in with availability.
Do it and see how you get on. It's different and you see how things get done in that world.....

Got a call today for a shoot tomorrow but just too short notice.

Will see what Monday brings. It's a shoot for a Victorian golfing film and I'm background, as far as I currently understand things, but as always, subject to change.

One of the organiser chappies I spoke to last week at 'wardrobe' (seemed like a producer or descision making type fella) asked my background. Appeared impressed with my driving/vip/evasive/SED history as well as my experience with firearms handling. Said there were current shortages within the industry. Said to remind him next week and he would point me in a few diverse directions. Seemed genuine so will see what happens. In any event, another box ticked in the bucket list!
