Consumer relay... 2.6 cdx
« on: 29 March 2016, 07:45:17 »

Can it be permanently removed with no ill effects?

And where does it live?

If your talking about the one that fees the rear ciggy sparker, yes, think they live under the center consul from memory, fitted one to my first MV6 (MV6's never had them) but its all a blur now as that was back around 2005.

Yes to permanent removal?

Never seen a relay under the centre console though...

Presumably it has a part number :-\

Its location varies with age IIRC. On 03, it sits alongside servotronic.

Removal will disable everything that relies on it, obviously.

Yep, it's in a group of 3 relays with the servotronic and aux socket relay, up behind the cabin fuseboxes above the driver's footwell.

Depends what you're attempting to achieve, but the rear lighter socket is driven from the abovementioned aux relay, which is itself driven by the delay relay, so you might not need to remove the delay relay, which will upset all sorts of things (windows, seat adjustment, courtesy lights....).

Ok, so replacement is a better long term strategy than removal :y

Basically car did 30 miles 3 weeks ago and has been started/shuufled around every other day or so since, but might have actually managed another three miles in that time. Car has probably done 75 miles since February last year and perhaps 500 miles since Feb '14.

Battery was brand new seven weeks ago. Fault is that the car was really sluggish to start, initially just clicking, but eventually churning into life when the key was held.

I have yet to run KWs charging tests, and suspect that the car simply needs a decent run to recharge it properly...

But seeing as it's gfs car, I am going belts and braces and the consumer relay is obviously on the list. Boot light and glovebox both ruled out as starters. It might also be power sounder related as local VX dealer modified the PS loom following battery issues six or so years ago, (they've been closed at least four years).

Presumably the only definitive test for the consumer relay is the substantial drop in current to a trace value when it times out :-\

Yep, measuring the idle current will eliminate anything else, of course, too.

.. But an easier solution to just check the consumer delay, is to plug in something with an LED on it (phone charger, etc) to the rear lighter socket, shut the doors and go have a cup of tea. 10-15 minutes later it should have gone out.

In fact, I think if you just leave the interior light on it'll go off once the delay times out.

You could do with getting a C-TEK or similar to keep the battery in better order if it's going to be regularly laid up.

It'd be kinder to the battery and alternator to give it a full charge on a mains charger before firing it up. :y

Presume its not got an NCDC head unit but if it does you can spot the timer by watching the steering wheel controls illumination.
