Windows 2000 Help!!!
« on: 10 July 2017, 12:35:29 »

Ok...  So I don't have an omega any more but I know there are some very clever IT people here so I thought I would ask!

I have a dedicated machine running windows 2000 and its connected to a scanner - updating it to something more recent is out of the question due to the software running on it and to be honest works just fine in any case.  However I need this connected to the network BUT clearly I don't want it connected to the internet.  is there anyway I can nobble the internet whilst keeping the intranet alive.  my router is a basic one supplied by plusnet business and I doubt it has anything in it to do the job so I think I will need to do something within windows - but what!

Any ideas please.

Thanks
Chris

I have 2, 2kpro as a htpc and advanced server 2000 connected to my win 10 pc,
through a switch because I cannot for the life of me work out how to get wirless devices to work, if it was xp it would do it out of the box

but I do have problems with file transfer, first off I can direcly connect both the 2k machines and browse files and what not but doing it from the win 10 machine is a no go.  microsoft probably thinks that if an older os is being used it must be for hacking so blocks it

I have to go throigh a public folder to view and transfer to the 2k machines.
I did try to set a shared printer but again it didnt work

What I did is map the network drives on 2k but add a network location on win 10

its a long process and frustrates you when the pc's are in seperate locations

I originally followed a couple of guides that are still floating about on the interwebz

Ill have a look and add the link if I can find it

Ideally you firewall it off from the rest of the network or create a separate subnet for it and the devices it needs to access.  However, a riskier and cheaper/easier method is to manually set the Ip address, leave the gateway blank or put in a false one.  Do the same for DNS servers.  Then disable SMB shares (if the scanner doesn't require it).  However, for the latter option if another device gets knobbled by malware on your network and it's payload is delivered via a worm then you are buggered so backup regularly)

If you know how to subnet, that's your best option.

If it's a simple network, just don't apply default gateway to the w2k machine
