Dropped someone off earlier...

On the opposite driveway were not one but two XJS's V12's  :)

Owner had the bonnet up on one with the engine purring away, so had to got over for a chat...apparently he had just had a new rad fitted as it was running too warm for his liking and was letting it idle to see if the temp stayed where it should be....

Both were mint condition both low mileages ..... one was 16 years old other 14 years old, it was the 14 year old one he was tinkering with.

The 16 year old one was up for sale....5.7L V12, I think he said the mileage was 20k (the other was a 6L V12), he wanted about £7k for it......

Ive always had a soft spot for a XJS, but ive never seen an example this clean and tidy....he reckoned the underneath had been galvanised and had no rust underneath ..... its tempting  :-\

Might have to see how much the insurance is on one of these..... ::)

As a replacement for the curvy E-Type the awkward looking XJS was not well received in 1975.

Personally I quite like the look of them now.

Originally 5.3 V12 later bored out to 6 litres. :y

Ah ok....must have missed heard him....5.3L then...

I used to like the twin headlamp conversion....but these two had the single headlamp and looked good with the chrome around them  :y

A lad a work brought in a book about the XJS. There were pictures of the various incarnations of the V12 from an original plumbers nightmare with pipes here there & everywhere to the later fuel injected 6.0 that looked almost like what you'd expect today under a bonnet. I wish I could justify single figure fuel consumption ......   ;)

That's a lot of car for £7k!  8)  Look after it for a few years and it could be a sound investment!  :y

brother bought one in 1997-a 1986 XJS V12.

Reg no was B20 XJS-cracking car!!

Got rid of it in about 2003-should have kept it.

What an engine-turbine smooth!

The 3.6[later 4.0]straight six was nearly as quick and a good bit more economical,but that's akin to buying the 2.3 Mustang as opposed to the 5.0 V8.!

I do like the old V12 engine though.

you have that the wrong way round: the E-type is so bloated and out of proportion that it looks like someone stuck an airline up the (hideous) exhaust and inflated it until it's about to burst. The XJS looked smooth, muscular and modern just like a Jag should.


The V12 justifies its complexity by being turbine smooth, quiet and effortless - perfect for a proper GT.


I would love an early one in a proper seventies colour.

If I were buying an old Jaguar I would have a pro inspection. Worth the money in the long run. I would recommend David Marks of www.davidmarksgarages.co.uk. He looks after my wedge too. Top man.  :y

There was a beautiful XJS in the mini-Earls Court motor show at Goodwood Revival; beautiful, I thought. Also damned expensive, but not as expensive as £130k for an E-Type from one of the dealers at the show :o

If I was buying a Jag with my head, the V12 would not feature (the straight six being the far superior engine)

I am a bit down the middle on looks, the early E-types (S1 & S2) I really like the look of, the later S3 with the gopping grille is way below the XJS for me (likewise the 2+2 - proportions are all off!).

The 6 is clearly the sensible choice, but I don't think I could go for an XJS and not have the full fat one!

I don't think an XJS (or any classic Jag) could be a purchase by anything other than the heart.
