I have an SRI XP 140 on 07. Does what it needs to proficiently. Had two recalls for the fire problem as it was one of 3000 that was found to have another faulty component

Id say avoid the lower spec school run types,
Elite, Design, Sri have much comfier seats.

Ive done about 100,000 in my 08 plate 1.9 cdti 150 elite, its needed very little in that time.
Its what I call my "enough" car
Comfy enough
Big enough
fast enough
practical enough
economical enough
reliable enough

Ill never love it, but it does exactly what it says on the tin, and does it well

Mine rolled over to 190k yesterday, 180k of which is from my use.

It works, its reliable, its reasonably well screwed together and its very flexible (its been a bus, van, commuter car and holiday wagon).

What you need to consider is what sort of miles you are doing as all the diesels have DPF and anything less than the 1.8 petrol struggles

Thanks for all the tips . Plenty to choose from , i was thinking to get diesel anyway but was unsure if they suffered the dreaded fuel pump packing up  :-\ On the issue of recalls , i presume if the work has been done there will be a certificate or something and if its not been done ...contact the stealers and they will fix foc  :)

I think Mark has 'only' worked on it twice.....DMF and Clutch, and cambelt etc.
Ive done everything else, not that theres been a great deal, radiator, few aircon bits, engine mount, usual servicing, fuel filler solenoid, dpf sensor pipe, aux belt & tensioner from memory
The EGR and boost valve tend to get cleaned every other oil change as performance drops when they clog
