Yes, your Sirship: K-Seal was a bad idea, but I was desperate! I was hoping that by having the HBV closed (CC on LO) that would have kept the K-Seal out of the heater matrix - would that have been total exclusion, or would some have creppt past?
I can't flush the block without mremoving the thermostat, can I? That's why I thought that draining, refilling and bringing up to temperature and repeat as necessary would have done the job. I do not want to do battle with THAT bolt!

Am I on the right lines here?

Ron.

Ah yes I stand corrected.  :-[

It depends how involved you're prepared to get then Ron.  :)

If your going to go to the effort of taking the plenum and inlet out, then a new thermostat is worth doing.  You could also pop the water pump off and attach your garden hose to the coolant bridge to flush out the oil cooler chamber.  ::)

Or you could change the water several times and let the water pump do the job for you.  ;)

My limited expertise dictates the latter plan of action - tedious and time-consuming, but at least I can manage it!
I don't think I need to change the thermostat, because the admirable James changed it fairly recently, with very little (audible) swearing.  :y

The HBV needs engine vacuum and an electrical signal to close, so, as soon as you stopped the engine, the HBV would have opened and convection will have carried the coolant round the heater matrix anyway.

Kevin, as you may have gathered from my previous post, I was disappointed to read your comments about the operation of the HBV. It seems that convection circulation isn't as efficient as I feared from your description, fortunately, because this morning I went man-shopping for about 12 miles, put the heater on "Hi" on the way back and checked the tank. It was a very dirty brown! It started the day nearly clear water.
So, I dodged a bullet?
The CC had been on "Lo" since March this year and only opened this morning, so when it cools I'll drain the radiator again and repeat as necessary.
Oh, and the heater was F hot on the way back this morning!  :y
