The fault lies with the manufacturers of DPFs; they need to make a device that is fit for purpose and will not clog up so readily - or at all!
Once again, the cost/blame has been passed on to the motorist.....  >:(

Ron.

It is fit for purpose (as I can confirm having stuck 194k miles on one with no issues)

The issue is those who insist on having a modern diesel for plodding about in.....there not up to that and cant be used for that.  :y

When buying a car, how do you know if the DPF has been gutted or not?  :-\

Not something Lord Opti needs to worry about of course, but for us mere mortals who like to get 40+ mpg.  :)

It will smoke when booted (not massive amounts but will be visible), with a DPF they only smoke on regen

Until next year it could be tricky, other than the snide Mr Fuse points out. However it's not really much different to a knackered CAT in a petrol car. Wouldn't know about that until mr MOT man hands you a fail slip.

Potential recourse to the dealer I guess if purchased within 6months of the problem being identified.  :-\

I guess a visual inspection, see if the it's been buggered about with underneath. Can't exactly do that when viewing cars though!

That said with VAG you could do a plug in and insect the DPF's condition via software... as sure you can on others. But do need the specialist software to do it

I doubt many dealers would be happy if you turned up with your trolley jack, nor would they let you plug in your gizmo.  ;)

Trouble is, most of the software mods frig that specific number to force the ECU to not regen  :y

Great, so can't confirm that either. So it gives false readings for back pressure and soot?  :-\

So i guess the only other way to look would be soot around the tail pipe, as DPF functioning should mean a diesel has a very clean tail pipe.

Boot it hard and look in the rear view mirror.

Saturation is calculated from back pressure and its the saturation that triggers a regen

I said we like to get 40+ mpg.  :)  Whether we achieve 40+ mpg is another matter!  ;D

That said my trip computer on the Mondeo was showing an average 48 mpg the other day when I tried.  :y
