Headlight adjusters ?
« on: 27 November 2017, 09:10:28 »

Headlight Adjusters
Never knowingly had a problem with these on any of my omegas ,
so to those in the know, this may seem a stupid question . . but are these adjusters to do with the automatic level movement on Xenon headlights or just the usual set up for general beam direction / height as per MOT spec etc.   Been getting the occasional "flash" at night  from oncoming vehicles while headlights are on . Both HID sensors seem to be ok  . .  to test these is it just the case of disconnecting the link rod then manually moving the sensor to see if HIDS move up & down ?   :-\  TIA   Al   ;)

Headlamps have adjusters inside to get the beam correct. The self levelling bit is done with the axle sensors that move the motor that is on the back of the headlamp unit.
I am having the same with my daily driver Zaf. Driving around on dip[ beam and others seem to think I am on high beam. Not yet fitted the Nightbreaker lamps yet

Its the manual adjusters that break Al. They are made from stupidly brittle plastic. Really need to remove the unit to investigate.
Often a gentle shake produces a tell tale rattle of broken bits of plastic loose inside.
My current broken one hasn't done that though, but the fact that turning the adjuster screw had no effect made me look further.
Shining a torch on through the back revealed the adjust has snapped.
The level system is inspected by two methods. When you switch the lights on with the car facing a wall or similar you should see the beams move as the system starts up.
Also, if you look under the car at the sensors, if the arm has become disconnected (usuall through wear) it will be pretty obvious.

Keith /Albs . . . thanks for replies . . .  so    .  .only MOT'd  1st October  . . & IF the headlights were too high on the manual adjustment  would it not have failed or at least been an advisory?

I will try the  start up test close to a wall & see what happens .  I know both sensors & rods are ok . There is no warning showing ( which is what usually happens when a rod pops off)

Im guessing that the brittle adjusters just snap when trying to adjust  . . so best left alone if no real issue.

The "flashing" from on coming vehicles has only been on 2 or 3 occasions , so maybe it is just the brightness of the xenons . . .not sure . but will look into it .

Will look now to see if there is a guide to actually adjusting the headlights. Need to find out where the screws are to adjust & what  screw does what   :-\ :-\

It's easy to tell if the adjuster has broken. Remove the black rubber cap from the back of the lamp & see  if the whole lens inside flaps about in the breeze when you touch it.  :y

Very, very obvious if adjusters broken.  On a 13yr old Omega, they will be.

Unless of course they have been previously upgraded . . .  ::) ::)

This car seems to have  been really well looked after by previous owner/s . . . so will get out there when I can & investigate

(I'm still recoving from some "very delicate" surgery carried out last Friday  :'( :'( :'( )
