vectra 2001 1.8 abs problem strange.
« on: 03 December 2017, 05:44:50 »

hi was driving this the other day and the abs came on at a slow steady stop witch was not good as made stopping worse as no real pressure on the braking. has anyone come accross this before as no codes, has done it a few time now but breaking is working as normal when it dont do this. thanks if can help, an old man drives it normally and his reactions are not that good if it dont work as it should.

Check all of the abs reluctor rings just in case one has cracked as it can mess up the readings but may not throw a code :y

Think it's pretty common for those abs rings to rust out and cause intermittent and false readings.

thanks will have a look tomorrow. was going to check the vacume line as well as it feels strange on the pedal, don't feel like there is anything there until its pumped 3 times, but the level is just below max. and pads have a lot of meat on them. discs look ok bit of rim rust fronts. have noticed the abs light stays on longer than migs when you start engine or just turn ignition on stays on for around 2-3 seconds longer ? but will have a look at the rings in morning when i go round again.  he only drives it at 40mph max i think. but only drive around town never drives far.

i had a look at the rings they look intact, but pass side was different shape to the rest, pass side was rounded cog shape and other 3 are point type. could not see if something had warn it down is it supposed to look like that. they are well rusted up but was unable to do anything today as it was cold and wet. so going to give them a clean up with a wire brush sometime this week. found a small air leak in the main vacuum line so replaced that, pedal now feels like it should but still the same with the breaks. pin hole in the plastic pipe on the seam were its made so put a rubber type on.

Fault codes and live data help pin point the problem wheel far easier if available.

Check the rings for cracks to, if they are not complete it affects the signal, its usually the fronts that cause the most issues.

I'm having the car for a few days due to windscreen on omega so will give it a good look over and see if it can be sorted, was driving it to day and when looked down getting in after been parked up and there was a screw on the floor near the break peddle. looks like a mettle type screw with a washer fitted cross head about 25mm long, has this fell out of somewhere under the dash, any ideas were it might be fitted ? know it was not there before as would of seen it and felt it when driving.

Sounds like a simple trim fixing screw.

On the reluctor rings fro the ABS, you can get just the rings which need warming up to fit.  :y

I think ive found the problem, disks are 2 microns /angel below the recommended disc size, and the pistons in the front brakes wont do full travel sometimes so think the warped or something. so not fixing it just yet said would change them in new year, not checked to see if the discs are warped but they probably are, so just put some new pads on so he can still drive around, old ones had plenty of meat on them, he only drives into town so think it should be fine for a few weeks, but gave it a good run down road and no problems with emergency stop or stopping normal, so ordering the parts, so ready in new year to fit them. and think will change the brake fluid as well, probably the original stuff. and just to be sure will change the back pistons as well. think should be all fine then.

It cant be discs/pads if the ABS is doing things without the brake pedal pressed.

garage had it up on ramps, and did the checks and had on computer and break tester, also needs a good wire down every where its bad underneath but still holding in. most of the body stone chip seal has gone, old man booked it in and went with it to garage, sandblasting a coating 260,thats the list that garage said was wrong. except rears pistons and brake fluid.   I dont think its worth paying out any more on it, will have a go at the under body in warmer weather wire brush it down and harriet or other make paint it and seal should cost a lot less, disks are 90 and pistons are going to be recon,  will see how that goes later on.
