Boris Bridge
« on: 19 January 2018, 21:17:04 »

No one has mentioned it yet, but today Bafoon Boris suggested there should be a bridge built over the English Channel, and his French counterparts seemed to have agreed.

They probably had enjoyed too much wine as who that is sane, and English, would suggest such an idea? The French, bless them, are probably thinking that they could push more of their unwanted immigrants over a bridge into England, so it makes sense for them!!

There is the rather important matter of the Channel being full of heavy ships proceeding up and down the World's busiest shipping lanes, plus all the security implications. In addition it
would encourage even more vehicle traffic than we have now and already cannot fully check for customs and immigration purposes, let alone with Kent already well filled with Channel traffic.

Like Boris Island, something coming out of his fuzzy head and through his mouth before any real consideration of what he is suggesting.

When you see the huge bridges that the Chinese have built, it is clearly feasible.  :y

However the fact that it would cost us ten times more than what the Chinese can build stuff when you factor in the cost of labour, materials, health & safety etc makes it a non starter.  ::)

In theory it's a good idea, and I think we need to be ambitious and think big when it comes to infrastructure.  Like the Victorians did! :y

A 22 mile bridge, anchored in, and stretching across, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world?
Good idea.....especially if you’re a terrorist.  ;D

Where Boris island is opening next week I look forward to this being finished very soon, but I'll play safe by not holding my breath. ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D

To save on the cost of construction why not just make it a 22 mile footpath which is free from the UK to France and £100 toll the other way. ;)

Do I need to setup a survey on which direction will be the busiest? ::) ::) ::)

Why not?  ???

I'm sure there is a solution for shipping, it just needs someone cleverer than me to come up with something that's all.  ;)

How about traffic lights?  ;D

I agree with your sentiments. We have become very adept as a nation at sticking plaster solutions. New runway at Heathrow is a good example. Got a date for opening? Of course not. We are good at saying why something cannot be done. Anyway the channel bridge wont happen. Brexit will be the excuse when our European friends decide or more likely fail to decide on a trade agreement. Of course if Brexit is reversed then the EU will pay for the bridge as a sort of welcome back present and to facilitate the fast movement of migrants.  ;D

Incidentally a bridge linking Africa to Europe near Tarifa has been mooted for some time. Not quite as long as the channel bridge but that too is a “ busy “ shipping lane with heavy ships.

Excuse me for being slightly pedantic but arn't all ships heavy?  ::)  :-\

Surely light ships vessels are generally known as boats?!  :-X  ;D

No, lightships are a completely different thing altogether... :P

Lizzie only mentions is because Ashford is already a convenient lorry park. No one else mentioned it because they neither live in Ashford, nor particularly care. ::)

The bridge would be a good idea with one very strict proviso. It must be one way, from this side of the channel.

Well in that case we might as well save some money and only build half of it!  ;D
