What is this hose? Y32SE
« on: 07 February 2018, 11:46:13 »

Hi all,

After I replaced the rocker cover gaskets yesterday, I'm putting my Y32SE back together, however, I don't remember unplugging this particular hose. The end marked with orange arrow looks like it was never plugged in to anything, AND I found a dead spider inside it. The picture was taken before I took it all off and to me it looks like it was just laying there  ::)

Is this some kind of air con exhaust pipe or something? Do I just leave it like that?

Is it the gearbox vent pipe? I cant tell from the pic if it is connected at either end. :-\

Stiff black plastic tube? Then it's the autobox ventilation tube. You leave it unobstructed with the open end pointing downwards so nothing can drop in. Perhaps cable tie it to the rubber oil breather tube at the back?

Shackend, the end on the right does go somewhere, the end on the left is lose.

Enceladus, Yes, very stiff, like a plastic tube.
Thank you, that's reassuring :)

Silly question, but could this hose be a less messy way of topping up the ATF? I know you still need to undo the level plug, but you wouldn't need the garden sprayer/lance to annoint you with fluid..... ???

I don't see why not, but perhaps someone will know a reason.  :-\

Only reason I can think of why not is the shape of the pipe[the curl at the end] and how you'd have to hold it to run the fluid down it might introduce a kink into the pipe causing an obstruction to the flow of fluid.I'm probably wrong on all above counts and will be interested to hear if it is in fact do-able.

thinking again as the pipe has been open for some time there might be some muck in there  that would get into the box.

But it would always have been open, so that would have always been a possibility, lessened by having the open end turned downwards.

You need to have the engine running to get the gearbox oil level right.

With the inlet manifold in place I don't think I could reach the gearbox breather pipe :-\ (and even if I could I don't enjoy wrestling with the top of the engine when it is hot :()

I bought a sprayer from screwfix for £9.99 https://www.screwfix.com/p/green-pressure-sprayer-7ltr/51100

It makes the job easy and at that price it seems perverse to go looking for a more difficult way of doing it ::)

Yep, I have one of those, but what a mess it makes!
It's only due to this thread that I wondered if using the vent pipe were feasible - worth a try?

I modified one with a schrader valve fitted to the cap. Pressurise it and top up the box. :y

Unclear Shackeng - you mean a valve on the sprayer?

How did it make a mess?

I managed to stay clean and free of 'eau de ATF' when I dropped the sumps and changed the filter on my Elite .

Interesting to see a LHD bonnet layout. Brake master cylinder obviously above brake pedal, but power steering reservoir in usual place and presumably everything else; maybe wiper layout reversed.

Ron.

Yes, by sawing off the bottom section of the hand pump (mine was a Killaspray), and fitting a schrader valve in it. Then just pressurise to whatever you feel lucky with. ::) I use about 40psi, which is plenty to fill the box from empty. :y
I also use it for all my other spraying requirements on another bottle. It saves all that tedious pumping. :y

You're right, it is LHD, imported from Germany.
