Clearly the problem was caused by the dingleberry unable to drive up a straight road, but I do have to wonder why the bus was travelling as fast as it appeared to be in those conditions..

It was Scotland, that's just everyday snow, nothing special.

Saw that on the news last night... good job it wasn't smellivision going by the van drivers reaction. (I wonder if he reversed into the vehicle behind in his panic :-\) Very good recovery from a possibly self inflicted situation... Bus could have been traveling a touch slower, but he clearly didn't panic.  8) Or brake. ;D

It wasn't some form of 'superhuman' skill  by the girlie bus driver.

She simply closed her eyes and yanked at the wheel. Pure luck. :)

That seems to be what new drivers are taught now: snatch top gear as soon as you can, and hope for the best.

I was awaiting a thread about this, that has been on TV a few times now.

As STEMO correctly stated in his opening post, this was a very good expert LADY bus driver that did everything by the book; she did not brake, she just delicately steered the bus around the obstacle (car) and did not panic.  She saved many people from potential injury and demonstrated  all the skills of an advanced driver of a PSV.  She is to be applauded, and as STEMO already has, men should recognise that without going into "all boys together" mode with all the usual lady driver jokes!

From the film she is travelling at about 30 mph, which should be acceptable on such a stretch of straight road, and in fact, as proof,  if she had been going any faster she would have lost control once she steered through. 8) 8) 8) :y

I might be in the minority but I feel that the driver was going too fast for the conditions.  I dont think she reacted late, she had obviously seen the car but was trying to figure out what the heck the muppet in the mini was doing.

She pulled off a great piece of driving to avoid a collision though but the whole thing could have been avoided with the correct application of speed to the conditions.

I think she did well, she missed the car and that's the important bit.  :y

..... she did not brake, she just delicately steered the bus around the obstacle (car) and did not panic.......

When interviewed she said she did brake. She came off the brake when the bus slewed, which thankfully put her in a perfect line to avoid everyone, which can clearly be seen on the footage. She admits that luck was on her side, and to be honest we all need a bit of luck in these situations.
Personally I think it matters not one jot, she avoided a collision by whatever means so the rest is irrelevant. Without the presence of the dash cam footage we wouldn't even be able to scrutinise.
I'm with STEMO, I think she did well. It was actually a very graceful slide, I'd have been well chuffed if it was me.  ;D

You don't know she stayed calm.  She was probably pissing her pants!  ;D

Hats off to her though!  :y
