I know the white markings are only for initial set-up but if you are using them Cam 2 should have the white line in the middle of a protruding tooth, not in a recess. Is the belt the right way around?
Cam 1 = recess,
Cam 2 = protruding tooth
Cam 3 = recess
Cam 4 = protruding tooth

Your photo shows Cam 2 line in a recess, which implies to me that the belt is on the wrong way around.
Are there any rotation arrows on it?

I agree, your belt seems to be the wrong way round. There should be an arrow on the belt indicating the direction of rotation. which is clockwise viewed from the front.

What make is your belt kit?

Thanks for all the replies. Just a quick closure. The belt is on and car running like a dream. Anyone tackling this job on their own needs to be patient. A few things. The belt was on correct. The timing was out by half a tooth on left bank so I set it all up with the gauges and lock tool. I also found that I had only one adjustable idler which makes things a bit more tricky. No mention in dvd or guide as far as I know.
Most interesting though was the belt I removed and the idlers/tensioner  all looked fine. No signs of any wear. Got me thinking what kind of high mileages others have done trouble free. Mine was done 9 years and 50k ago by a dealer.
Oh and finally. A note of praise for the dealer. My local one gave me a free loan of their locking kit. A quality tool by kent Moore. I returned the Sykes pickavant one which if it was genuine was total shite. I sent loads of photos to SP head office but got no reply!
Until the next job thanks and best wishes.

One adjustable idler is actually easier, but you fit the belt anticlockwise around it. Do that correctly and cams 3&4 are set, which just leaves 1&2 to adjust.
It is mentioned in the DVD.

Visual inspection of any cam belt and rollers is a waste of time unless the belt is way overdue. At which point you'd be replacing it anyway.
Good to know that you got it done.

Glad to hear you got it sorted in the end. Well done!
What make/model was the timing belt kit that you used?
